Millbrook takes momentum before halftime, rolls past Broughton on Saturday afternoon

Millbrook scored two touchdowns in the last 1:38 of the second quarter to break a tie with Broughton, then rode that momentum to a convincing non-conference win on Saturday.

After being tied 14-14 in the second quarter, Millbrook scored the final 31 points of the game to walk away with a 45-14 victory.

On the Wildcats’ opening drive of the game Brilison McCullers broke a run down to the 5-yard line, then ran into the end zone two plays later. Then after a defensive stop and a Malachi Gilchrist punt return to the Broughton 33-yard line, Bryson Gray connected with Brandon Leacock on a nine-yard pass to give Millbrook a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

But Millbrook’s offense began to stall in the second quarter and Broughton took advantage.

Davis Cunningham intercepted a Millbrook pass and gave the Capitals the ball at the 39-yard line. That led to a nine-yard touchdown pass from Owen Vogler to Christian Outlaw to bring the Caps within seven points.

Millbrook went three and out on its next drive. Vogler then completed a 52-yard pass to Matthew Vannoy to tie the game at 14-14 with 3:53 left in the second quarter.

The Wildcats’ offense got back on track on its next possession. McCullers broke a run down to the 14-yard line, then down to the 4-yard line on the next play. Nessiah McArthur capped off the drive with a two-yard run to give the Wildcats at 21-14 lead with 1:38 left before halftime.

Millbrook managed to get the ball back before halftime and attempted a 33-yard field goal, but Jack Chenery blocked the attempt. Time expired as the teams tried to recover the loose ball, but Millbrook was whistled for a 15-yard face mask penalty, giving Broughton one un-timed down.

Broughton called a timeout to setup a play, but it was Millbrook’s defense that took advantage. Richard Jackson intercepted a pass by the Caps. As he was being tackled, Jackson used a lateral pass to McArthur who took it about 60 yards to the end zone. Millbrook led 28-14 at halftime.

That shift in momentum carried over to the second half for the Wildcats.

Early in the third quarter, Bobby Fulmore scored on a one-yard run to extend Millbrook’s lead to 35-14.

In the fourth quarter quarter, Angel Gomez-Corona hit a 29-yard field goal to push the lead to 24 points. Then Gray completed a four-yard pass to Fulmore for one last touchdown late in the quarter to give the Wildcats a 45-14 win.

Millbrook (3-0) continues non-conference play next week with a road game at rival Sanderson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Broughton (2-2) also has a non-cofnerence game next week. The Capitals will travel to Wakefield at 7 p.m.
