The Chicago Bulls jersey worn by Michael Jordan in his preseason debut was sold at an auction for $4.215 million, according to a Sotheby’s spokesperson.
According to the Sotheby’s spokesperson, it’s the fifth-most expensive NBA jersey of all time behind:
- Jordan’s $10.1 million “Last Dance” jersey
- A signed Kobe Bryant jersey worn in his lone MVP season in 2007-08 which sold for just more than ($5.8 million)
- A 1972 NBA Finals jersey worn by Wilt Chamberlain during the Los Angeles Lakers’ first NBA title run ($4.9 million)
- a 1996-1997 Michael Jordan jersey worn across five months ($4.7 million)
Sotheby’s announced the sale of Jordan’s first preseason jersey on Wednesday.
Jordan wore the jersey during his preseason debut against the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 5, 1984, in Peoria, Illinois, at the Peoria Civic Center before a crowd of about 2,000 people. He scored 18 points in the game.
Photo-matching company MeiGray and forensic analysis company Proven Data matched thes same Jordan jersey to preseason games played in 1984 on Oct. 7 and 13.
