Matt Taylor departs Washington after 2 seasons leading the football program

In 2025, the Washington High School Pam Pack will have a new head football coach. The new coach will be the third to coach the program in four seasons.

Matt Taylor confirmed with HighSchoolOT last night that he resigned from the role two weeks ago. Taylor, who was previously the offensive coordinator at D.H. Conley, got a new job back at Conley, where its expected he’ll be an assistant. Taylor did not move from the Greenville area after getting the job in Washington and the commute became a lot for his young family. His wife and him have three daughters under the age of five.

He says that he has nothing but love for Washington and he doesn’t regret a single decision.

In 2023, he started his tenure with a 3-7 overall output.

This fall, Taylor’s team made big improvements and finished with a 4-6 overall record and a playoff berth. They surprised the area with wins over Eastern Plains Conference favorites Farmville Central and SouthWest Edgecombe. The team finished with a 3-3 mark in conference play and came in fourth. Four of their losses came in one-score games. Washington fell on the road at Wallace-Rose Hill in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A East playoffs.

With an average daily membership of 805 students, Washington is set to become a 4A program after the NCHSAA realigns into eight classifications next year.

Washington High School has appeared in three regional finals and won one. That state championship appearance came in 2014, when the Pam Pack lost to East Lincoln in the 2AA state championship by a score of 14-13.
