Marlboro County in South Carolina has recently employed eight ex-high school football coaches from North Carolina.
Eight high school football coaches from North Carolina were hired by the Marlboro County School District in South Carolina on Monday night. The county borders both North and South Carolina.
There are several noteworthy individuals within the group.
Cory Johnson will be the head coach for Marlboro County High School after leading Clinton High School in North Carolina to a 61-12 overall record and a 2A state championship appearance over six seasons. Johnson will also be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Dennis McFatten joined as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, following his role as head coach at Lumberton High School in Robeson County during the previous season. McFatten is highly regarded as an up-and-coming coach in the industry.
Lonnie Cox, who has experience as a head coach at Union Pines High School and Fairmont High School, is transitioning to a teaching role and will also be the wide receivers coach at Marlboro. This change comes after Cox’s tenure as the athletic director and administrator at Pine Forest.
Ryan Hunt, previously serving as the defensive coordinator under Johnson at Clinton, has been named the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for Marlboro County.
Hashan Tyson, previous associate head coach at Chambers High School, has transitioned to the role of edge rushers coach at Marlboro County.
At Scotland County High School, Johnson, McFatten, Cox, Hunt, and Tyson were all coaches. David Johnson, the previous athletic director at Scotland County, is currently the principal at Marlboro County High School.
Amir McNeill, a previous standout for Scotland, has been chosen as the coach for Marlboro’s cornerbacks. McNeill previously played for NC A&T University and was coaching linebackers at South Carolina State in the previous year. Similarly, Karfa Kaba, a former defensive lineman for Scotland, will coach his position at Marlboro. Kaba has played for both NC Central and NC A&T.
Dion Norwood, the strength and conditioning coach for Clinton, has been recruited as the running backs coach for Marlboro.
In 2023, Marlboro County had a 3-7 record for the entire season.
