Man with firearm arrested at Rolesville football game after jumping stadium fence

A person in possession of a firearm was arrested at Rolesville High School during a varsity football game on Friday night.

Ernest Quinton Cannady, 42, of Youngsville was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property, the Town of Rolesville said in a press release on Saturday afternoon.

Cannady allegedly jumped the fence of the stadium during Rolesville’s home game with East Wake High School. According to an email from the school’s principal, Phelan Perry, a parent witnessed Cannady and reported to officials that he was in possession of a firearm.

The arrest warrant for Cannady says he had a semi-automatic pistol.

“Officers quickly located the individual shortly after being alerted. The suspect was taken into custody without any further incident, ensuring the safety of all attendee at the event,” the town said in a press release.

Both the school district and the town say Cannady has been permanently banned from the school’s property.

“We are extremely grateful to the parent who immediately notified the appropriate officials,” Perry said.

In an email to school families, Perry said there isn’t any evidence the person intended to use the firearm at the game.

“Rolesville Police Department’s Chief (David) Simmons commends the officers involved for their swift and professional response, which prevented any potential escalation of the situation,” the town’s press release said. “The safety of our students, staff, and community members remains our top priority.”

Rolesville defeated East Wake on Friday night, leaving with a 52-0 win.
