Mallard Creek claims school’s first 4A boys indoor track title; Multiple state meet records fall

Mallard Creek claimed the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys indoor track & field state championship for the first time in school history on Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

The Mavericks finished the day with 57 points, beating second place Cuthbertson’s 42 points.

It was the relay teams that led the way for Mallard Creek. The Mavericks won the 4×200 meter relay, beating Cuthbertson by just 0.35 seconds. Later, the 4×400 meter relay team beat Willow Spring by 0.10 seconds to win gold. Mallard Creek finished the final race of the event in 7:56.89.

The Mallard Creek 4×800 relay team placed second, falling about four seconds shy of first-place Marvin Ridge.

Mallard Creek also had first-place finishes from Nyan Brown in the 55-meter hurdles and CHristian Dixon in the 55-meter dash.

Multiple records fell on Saturday night as well.

Joshua Cooper of Willow Spring set a new state meet record and 4A meet record in the 500 meter race, finishing with a time of 1:03.44. The previous record was 1:03.65, set by New Bern’s Andrew Hendrix in 2009.

Kyle Barney of Marvin Ridge broke the state meet and 4A meet record in the 1000-meter run. Barney crossed the finish line in 2:27.76, beating the old record of 2:28.85 set by Kyle Durham of Weddington in 2019.

Parkland’s Micah Walker also broke a state meet an 4A meet record. Walker recorded a time of 33.96 in the 300 meter dash, beating the old record of 34.22 set by Isaiah Monroe of Dudley in 2022.

Marvin Ridge, Enloe, and Riverside rounded out the top five in the team standings on Saturday.
