Lakewood boys avenge only loss, girls stay undefeated in wins over Midway
SALEMBURG, N.C. — Both basketball teams at Lakewood have a few things in common. They’ve got a freshman and a senior as their two leading scorers. They’re looking like teams that could disrupt the 1A East. And, on Friday, they both picked up wins against county foe Midway in nonconference action.
Girls: Lakewood 50, Midway 20
For the Leopards’ girls, a 50-20 win kept them undefeated on the year.
Lakewood (7-0) jumped out to a commanding 21-9 lead at halftime over the Raiders (5-4).
Freshman Areona McKoy had 22 points, just a hair shy of her team-leading 25.5 points per game.
Senior Alexis Rhodes, the team’s second leading scorer, had an outburst with 23 points — including seven 3s.
Midway’s Kara Beth Benton had a team-high six points for Midway.
Boys: Lakewood 54, Midway 47
For the Lakewood boys, a 54-47 victory was the team’s sixth straight and avenged the only loss.
The Leopards’ leading scorer is Cameron Williams, who turns from a punishing 275-pound lineman in football to the nimble-footed low-post presence in basketball season. He had a team-high 15 points, helping Lakewood erase a 22-18 halftime deficit.
Lakewood (6-1) didn’t take its first lead until midway in the third quarter, partly due to star freshman Xavier Hall dealing with foul trouble. A 6-foot-9 triple-double threat now averaging 13.4 points, 15.4 rebounds, and 7.0 blocks on the season, he had a “quiet” nine points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks — only quiet because Midway held him to zero in all three categories during the first quarter.
Hall fouled out with about two minutes left, but Lakewood was able to hang on thanks to savvy guard play by Jaziah Brunson on offense (making three of four free throws down the stretch) as well as forcing some turnovers on defense.
It was the first loss of the year for Midway (8-1), who got 10 points from Travis Gist and 16 from Kemari McNeil.
