Kyle Filipowski was successful in making shots, rebounding, and assisting his teammates with kickouts. By the conclusion of the game, he almost achieved a triple-double while No. 21 Duke outscored their opponent in the second half to secure a comfortable victory.

The 7-foot preseason All-American from Associated Press scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds with a career-high eight assists during the Blue Devils’ 89-68 victory over Hofstra on Tuesday night. The outstanding performance included four 3-pointers and three blocked shots.

According to Coach Jon Scheyer, Filipowski’s performance was impressive, especially since he only scored 17 points in his last two games and had a 2 for 10 shooting record in his previous game.

Filipowski stated that for him, it was simply a mental challenge. However, he acknowledged the support he receives from his teammates and coaches, who help boost his confidence. When he focuses on playing without overthinking, he finds success. Breaking out of that slump and enjoying the game brings him a great sense of joy.

Duke had a shooting percentage of 55%, successfully making 11 out of 22 3-pointers. Additionally, four players scored in double figures. However, they were still without point guard Tyrese Proctor due to an ankle injury.

Duke’s Jeremy Roach contributed 19 points and eight assists to the team’s victory. Initially trailing 37-32 towards the end of the first half, Duke made a strong comeback with a 12-2 run before halftime. This run included five consecutive made shots, and continued into the second half with Filipowski’s two successful right-corner 3-pointers. This helped Duke secure a comfortable 55-43 lead.

Darlinstone Dubar was the top scorer with 24 points and made seven 3-pointers to guide the Pride (6-4) to victory. Despite shooting at 50%, they had 14 turnovers which resulted in 31 points for the Blue Devils.

Hofstra coach Speedy Claxton stated that the size and athleticism of the opposing team caused difficulties for them. He mentioned that their team is not accustomed to facing such size and athleticism in their regular games.

BIG PICTURE

Hofstra was predicted to finish fourth in the Coastal Athletic Association and after a slow start of 1-2, they bounced back with five consecutive wins. However, their momentum was halted by a loss to St. Louis on Saturday. Hofstra has only managed to defeat an AP Top 25 team three times in the past two seasons.

The Blue Devils, led by Filipowski’s impressive performance despite seven turnovers, ended their two-game losing streak against nonconference teams on the road by defeating Charlotte at home this past weekend. Duke’s scoring picked up in the second half, especially off of turnovers, resulting in a 20-point lead.

“We were very disciplined, especially in terms of ball control,” stated Scheyer. “Our consistent pressure may not have resulted in many steals, but it definitely wore down our opponents.”

DUBAR’S FLAIR

Dubar, who had an average of 17.7 points, made five 3-pointers before halftime. He was enthusiastic about making sure Duke’s famously energetic fans were aware of his success.

Following his third successful shot, he turned his attention to the enthusiastic fans in the courtside section known as the “Cameron Crazies.” As he backpedaled down the court, he motioned for them to quiet down by placing a finger on his lips. Soon after, he made another shot and proceeded to run down the court while visibly counting off each of his three-pointers with his left hand.

Hofstra University’s men’s basketball team, known as The Pride, will be hosting Norfolk State this Saturday.

Duke: The Blue Devils will take a break for exams and their next game will be on Dec. 20 against No. 6 Baylor at Madison Square Garden.
