Some new schools were represented in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 4A girls tennis individual state championships in Raleigh this weekend.

For the first time since 1988 a Jordan athlete won the singles title and New Hanover won its first individual girls tennis title with a championship in the doubles competition. It was just the second time New Hanover was represented in a championship match at the tournament.

Addi McDowell claimed the singles championship for Jordan, beating Myers Park’s Teagan Reilly 6-0, 6-2 in the final match. Earlier in the day, McDowell ousted Cardinal Gibbons’ Celeste Davis in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1.

On Friday, McDowell picked up wins over Charlotte Catholic’s Ella Davis (6-1, 6-1) and Broughton’s Rankin Barnhill (6-1, 6-3) to reach the semifinals.

The last time a Jordan girls tennis player won the singles championship was in 1988 when Scotti Thomas claimed the title for the Falcons.

New Hanover’s doubles team of Sophia Catino and Hanna Davis defeated Myers Park’s Kayla Nofziger and Agnes Shin 6-1, 6-4 to win the doubles title.

Catino and Davis had to beat the Apex Friendship duo of Carolyn Izod and Emma Cyrus to advance to the championship round. Izod was part of the 2023 state championship doubles team for the Patriots. Catino and Davis won the semifinal round 6-4, 6-3.

On Friday, Catino and Davis beat Panther Creek’s Omisha Shinha and Tanvi Komaragiri 6-1, 6-1 and Charlotte Catholic’s Madison McWilliams and Anna Groccia 6-0, 6-0.

The only other appearance in a girls tennis championship for New Hanover happened in 2019 when Frances Coleman and Peyton Philemon lost to Charlotte Catholic’s team of Maggie Gehrig and Ava Tan, 6-1, 6-1.
