Jasmine Felton records double-double as East beats West in girls basketball all-star game
Jasmine Felton’s last high school basketball game representing Northeastern was one to remember.
The 5-foot-11 guard recorded a double-double en route to earning most valuable player honors in the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Girls Basketball Team. Felton’s 30-point, 10-rebound performance helped the East to an 84-68 win over the West.
Felton’s scoring was efficient. The future Campbell basketball player was 13-of-17 from the field, including 1-of-1 from three-point range, and went a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line. She also recorded six blocks.
“I just let the game come to me, not force things,” Felton said after the game. “I was just having fun.”
The East had control of the game from the start, as the West never held a lead through 40 minutes. The East opened the game on a 5-0 run and forced the West to call a timeout with 13:50 left in the first half up 19-6.
Before halftime, the West managed to get the deficit down to five points, but a buzzer-beating three-point basket by South Garner’s Tamia Darden gave the East a 46-38 halftime lead.
Audra Hillman of Wake Forest opened the second half with a three-pointer of her own to push the East’s lead back to double-digits. The East led by as many as 25 points in the second half.
The difference in the game came in the paint. The East outscored the West 53-38 in the paint and won the rebound battle 59-49.
The West struggled from the field, shooting just 25-of-83 included 9-of-32 from behind the arc. The East shot 44.2% from the field, while the West was limited to just 30.1%.
While Felton’s 30-point, 10-rebound double-double led all scorers in the game, Darden came close to a double-double of her own with 19 points and nine rebounds. Hillman finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
Felton came close to breaking some all-star game records. She was three points shy of the scoring record of 33 points, set by Angie Armstrong of Fike in 1979, and she was one field goal short of the record of 14 made field goals held by North Mecklenburg’s Andrea Stinson from the 1987 all-star team.
The West was led by Hattie Sloyan of Page with 14 points and Audra Petty of Randleman with 11 points. Rosman’s Alissa Cheek finished with 10 rebounds and five points in the game.
This marks the second straight year the East has beaten the West in the all-star girls basketball game. Last year the East won 74-68. The East leads the all-time series 26-23.
