Ja’Neil Harris sets new meet record as T.W. Andrews wins back-to-back 2A boys track state championship

For the second consecutive season, T.W. Andrews has won the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A boys track & field state championship.

The Red Raiders were dominant in their repeat, beating out second place East Burke by 46 points, 98-52.

Ja’Neil Harris, one of the top runners on the day for T.W. Andrews, set a new meet record in the 200 meter dash. Harris finished the race in 21.12 seconds, beating the previous record of 21.23 seconds set by Lexington’s James Drummond in 2013.

Harris’ teammate Correy McManus finished second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.06 seconds.

T.W. Andrews also had the top two spots in the 100 meter dash. McManus won the race with a time of 10.72 seconds, just 0.03 seconds ahead of Harris, who finished second.

In the 300 meter hurdles, Jeremiah King and Gracious Chia placed second and third for the Red Raiders. Owen’s Trevae Woodyard won the race with a time of 37.83 seconds, more than a full second ahead of King and nearly two seconds ahead of Chia.

Two T.W. Andrews relay teams finished with gold medals. The 4×200 meter relay team won with a time of 1:26.85 and the 4×100 meter relay team won with a time of 42.14 seconds.

Kenneth Byrd led East Burke to a second place finish in the team race. Byrd won gold in the 110 meter hurdles and long jump, and . placed second in the high jump.

Another meet record fell in the pole vault. Bandys’ Kage Hefner recorded a pole vault height of 16-0, beating the previous record of 15-4 set by Byrd in 2022.
