On Friday, the nine major football conferences in the Bowl Subdivision and Notre Dame came to an agreement for a six-year extension to the College Football Playoff, securing its continuation until the 2031 season. This is a major milestone, as it establishes a plan for sharing revenue and allows the CFP to finalize a media rights agreement.

The Executive Director, Bill Hancock, stated that the contract does not determine the format of the CFP for 2026 and beyond. The number of teams in the playoff will increase from four to twelve this season, but there is a possibility for further growth after the current agreement with ESPN ends in 2025.

Unfortunately, Hancock was unable to provide specific information about the revenue sharing arrangement. However, he did mention that the conferences and Notre Dame have reached a consensus that a minimum of five conferences will have guaranteed access to the playoff every year.

Hancock informed the AP that this agreement is a significant advancement for the CFP. It guarantees that fans can look forward to a football post-season tournament and witness top-performing teams vie for the national championship.
