The Edmonton Oilers secured their fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday night with a 6-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Zach Hyman recorded his second hat trick of the season and was assisted by Connor McDavid on all three goals.

Ryan McLeod, Mattias Ekholm, and Warren Foegele each contributed a goal to the Oilers’ score, while Mattias Janmark racked up three assists. Stuart Skinner made 39 saves in goal.

After starting with a record of 2 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie, Edmonton has turned things around and won 8 out of their last 11 games.

“I find it very reassuring to get back on course,” expressed Hyman. “Returning to our true potential as a team feels great, and I believe there is still room for improvement and progress. It’s wonderful to regain our team’s confidence and play at this level. And we will keep doing so.”

Jordan Staal scored in the third period for the Hurricanes (14-10-1), who have lost two in a row. Pyotr Kochetkov was pulled after giving up three goals on six shots in the first 5:46 of the game. Antti Raanta came on and finished with 25 saves.

Staal expressed his disappointment with the overall performance by saying, “It was simply not good enough.” He noted that there was a lack of resistance and players were relying on luck rather than actively pushing back. This led to the opposing team having numerous 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 opportunities, which ultimately resulted in their victory.

Rod Brind’Amour, the coach of the Hurricanes, was not trying to sugarcoat the situation.

“The entire game was a disappointment from beginning to end,” he stated. “I have never witnessed us play like that and I am at a loss for words. It is unacceptable, especially from our top players who need to step up.”

Edmonton made two goals on their first two shots of the game. In just 28 seconds, Foegele took control of the puck behind Carolina’s net and passed it to McLeod, who scored his second goal of the season. Shortly after, McDavid made a beautiful pass across the goal crease to Ekholm, who easily tapped it in. Oilers’ defenseman Evan Bouchard continued his impressive nine-game point streak with an assist on the play.

The Oilers of Edmonton scored two goals within the first 41 seconds of the game, making it the second-fastest occurrence in team history. The current record, set in 1982 by Mark Messier and Dave Lumley, stands at 24 seconds.

The Oilers maintained their offensive momentum with another goal at 5:46 in the first period, when Hyman completed a swift move and scored his 13th goal by cutting in front of the net. This resulted in Kochetkov being replaced for the rest of the game.

With just six minutes remaining in the first period, Edmonton extended their lead to 4-0 when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins passed to Hyman who was wide open and scored with a one-timer shot that Raanta couldn’t stop. This was Hyman’s second goal of the game. McDavid also earned his second assist, marking his fifth game with multiple points during his current seven-game point streak.

The Oilers continued their momentum by scoring another goal at 2:49 of the second period. Janmark blocked a shot, allowing Foegele to go on a breakaway and ultimately jam the puck under Raanta’s pads for the score.

Foegele praised the team for their strong performance, commenting that they showed a high level of maturity. He noted that they were able to score two goals early on and remained focused throughout the game without sacrificing defense for offense. He also emphasized the importance of holding onto leads in order to be successful in the league and was pleased that they were able to do so.

Seven minutes into the third period, Carolina ended Skinner’s attempt at a shutout when Staal received the final pass on a 3-on-1 break and scored his third goal.

In the middle of the third period, McDavid made an impressive play by stealing the puck at the Carolina blue line and then maneuvering past the defense to set up a pass to Hyman for his third goal of the game and third career hat trick. Hyman has now scored 11 goals in his last 10 games.

McDavid achieved his 570th career assist in the NHL, surpassing Jari Kurri for the third-highest total in the history of the Oilers franchise.
