The Carolina Hurricanes are likely to be without their top two goaltenders for Saturday night’s home game against Ottawa.
And Frederik Anderson, who has played in just four games this season, is expected to miss a significant period of time, Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said Friday.
Andersen’s injury was originally classified as “week to week” in late October, but Brind’Amour said the most recent update is that Andersen will miss “way longer.”
Without Andersen, Pyotr Kochetkov (8-2) has gotten the majority of starts for the Hurricanes, who are second in the Metro Division. Kochetkov left Wednesday’s game against Utah in the third period.
Brind’Amour said he is “doubtful,” but did not consider the injury a long-term problem.
“Injuries in general are worrisome because you don’t have your team,” Brind’Amour said. “But the goaltending position is the backbone of the whole thing. Freddie’s thing is a little more worrisome. Kutch, I think could be back, maybe tomorrow, maybe next. We’re not too concerned with that. Freddie thing is obviously a little more concerning.”
Goalie Spencer Martin (0-1 in two games this season) is the Hurricanes’ other goaltender. The team could recall an goalie Yaniv Perets from Chicago, but Brind’Amour said no decision has been made on that.
“I’m hoping that we don’t have to rely on him too much, but in the past, last year when we called on him, he was solid,” Brind’Amour said of Martin, who went 3-8 in 13 games (10 starts) for the Hurricanes last season.
The team will be without center Seth Jarvis as well. Jarvis is expected to be out until next week with an upper-body injury that has cost him two games already.
Jarvis played in all but one game over the last two seasons. He battled a torn labrum for much of last year.
“He wants to play.” Brind’Amour said. “He’s old school in that way, that’s for sure.”
The Hurricanes play Saturday (vs. Ottawa) and Sunday (vs. St. Louis) at Lenovo Center in Raleigh. The team’s next game is Wednesday in Philadelphia.
