Hunt hands rival No. 13 Fike its first loss of the season

WILSON, N.C. — In a near-repeat of last year’s first meeting between the two schools, a red-hot Hunt girls soccer team handed Fike its first loss in conference play.

Hunt, which has now won five of its last six, scored both of its goals in the first half to win 2-1 against its rival.

No. 13 Fike (8-1, 3-1) entered the match undefeated but fell behind after Hunt junior Mariah Polk struck first. Just before halftime, Kamryn Graybeal beat the keeper one-on-one on a quick counter to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Fike got on board in the 54th minute as Karys Wheeler’s 45-yard free kick took a high bounce over the Hunt goalkeeper to cut the lead in half.

Hunt goalkeeper Callie Roundtree stood tall in goal, however, saving several close Fike chances in the final 20 minutes, including one in the 79th to preserve the win. Hunt (6-3-1, 5-0) hasn’t lost to Fike since 2018,
