HSOT All-State teams and Final Rankings history

HSOT All-State teams and Final Rankings history

Since 2020, HighSchoolOT has published rankings and all-state teams in every sport that’s sanctioned by the N.C. High School Athletic Association. This page will have links to each.

As the years have progressed, the rankings have changed over time, as has HighSchoolOT.

HighSchoolOT started in the fall of 2008 and — about a decade later — went statewide, just before the 2019-20 season. However, that first year of statewide coverage came to an abrupt end: the pandemic shut down high school sports in the spring of 2020. A few “All-East” and “All-West” teams were published that year, and the spring sports were given “All-Senior” teams to honor the classes whose final seasons were lost to the pandemic, but there were no all-state teams.

The first all-state team was published the following year. However, for the next two years, most top 25 rankings were still split between East and West, using county lines. In 2022, those were merged into a statewide top 25, to be consistent across all sports. That same year, the emergence of area code top 15 rankings still gave the HSOT top 25 a regional feel. In 2024, all final rankings from 2020-21 and 2021-22 were streamlined into a statewide format to enhance the history of the statewide top 25, making it easier for readers to compare and track results across different years with better perspective.

With the arrival of area code rankings, more schools than ever are able to see where they stack up — both in their own backyard and across the state — and track their movement from week to week. Some sports only have preseason and final rankings — swimming, cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field, and golf. Others, like wrestling and tennis, have four rankings: preseason, midseason, end-of-regular-season, and final.

The all-state teams have changed here and there as well. For some, positional requirements and the size of the teams were tweaked. For others, an honorable mention was formed where there was not one otherwise. Now, almost all all-state teams follow the same format: a first, second, and third team, followed by a large honorable mention that is two times the size of the first team. The only sports without honorable mention are indoor and outdoor track & field, plus swimming. The only sports without a third team all-state are girls wrestling and indoor track & field.

Over the last four years, nearly every NCHSAA and N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association school — even those among the smallest in the state — can call one one of its own athletes a HSOT all-state player. The same goes for some members of the N.C. Christian Schools Association and N.C. Homeschool Athletic Commission, the other half of the four associations whose athletes and teams are eligible for rankings and all-state honors.

With this history lesson now concluded, here are the links to each one of HSOT’s all-state teams and final statewide rankings.
