Hoggard’s big first half carries it past Laney

Hoggard remained unbeaten in Mideastern 3A/4A Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a lopsided win over Laney.

The Vikings scored the first three touchdowns of the game and quarterback Matthew Boring threw for four touchdowns as Hoggard beat Laney 48-14.

Boring connected with Blake Edwards for the first touchdown of the game — a 10-yard completion. Then Isaiah Newkirk scored his first of two rushing touchdowns with a 30-yard carry.

Hoggard led 14-0 after one quarter, and quickly added to its lead in the second. Boring completed a 46-yard pass to Weston Chalk to push the Vikings’ lead to 21-0.

Laney found the end zone on its next drive. Ellis Williams scored on a two-yard rush to bring Laney within 21-7, but Hoggard scored the next three touchdowns.

Just before halftime, Boring threw a 49-yard pass to Demetrius Smith for another touchdown, which gave the Vikings a 27-7 lead at the break.

Boring and Nas Session connected for a 60-yard touchdown in the third quarter, then Newkirk scored on a four-yard carry to push the lead to 41-7 going into the fourth quarter.

Each team scored one last time in the fourth quarter. Joquin Dingle scored on a 10-yard run for Laney, then Andrew Hubard connected Desyn Durand for a 49-yard touchdown for Hoggard.

Boring finished the day 15-of-28 for 291 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. All four of his touchdown passes were to different receivers.

Newkirk led the team in rushing with 52 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Edwards had eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Hoggard (4-1, 2-0) returns to action on Friday night with a road game at West Brunswick at 7 p.m. It is the start of back-to-back road conference games for the Vikings. Hoggard will be at Ashley the following week.

Laney (2-3, 1-1) will also play again on Friday night. The Buccaneers will host South Brunswick at 7 p.m.
