Help on the way: NC State recruit Zymicah Wilkins and Christ School prep for last ride in Saturday’s state final

Help is on the way for the N.C. State men’s basketball program, but Zymicah Wilkins has one more goal to accomplish first.

Wilkins and Christ School will aim for a second consecutive state championship on Saturday. The Greenies (25-2) will take on Carmel Christian at 7 p.m. at Providence Day School in Charlotte.

Wilkins, the No. 3 player in North Carolina according to 247 Sports, signed with the Wolfpack on Nov. 14 as part of a two-man freshman class for N.C. State.

In his final prep campaign, Wilkins has led Christ School with 14.8 points per game and 7.8 rebounds. Those don’t sound like numbers that jump off the page for a four-star prospect. But if you look deeper, it’s part of what makes Wilkins so unique.

For the Greenies, Wilkins — a two-time HSOT first team all-state selection — doesn’t have to carry the load of the team on his shoulders.

In fact, his ability to make those around him better might be his signature quality.

“Obviously, he’s a great player,” head coach Joshua Coley said after Wilkins scored 21 points, pulled down just as many rebounds and had five assists in the John Wall Holiday Invitational in December. “He brings his hard hat everyday. Twenty one points, 21 rebounds speaks for itself and I think the impact on our team is tremendous.”

Looking at the stat sheet and constantly seeing double-doubles never gets old to Coley.

“It’s incredible,” Coley said. “It’s a testament to his hard work, testament to believing in his teammates and us as coaches. I’m honored to be coaching a guy who can get 21 points and 21 rebounds.”

Madden Collins, a teammate of Wilkins who is heading to American University next season, expressed how much easier Wilkins makes the game for everyone.

“He’s great at so many different things,” Collins said. “Being able to throw it to him and trust that he’s going to make the right play 100% of the time is fantastic.”

Wilkins has been a double-digit scorer his entire career, capped out by a 28.0 average as a sophomore at R-S Central in Rutherfordton.

At 6-foot-9 and 215 pounds, Wilkins is a natural in the paint, but shows flashes of the modern game, as shown with his nearly three assists per game.

“It’s really more to the game than scoring,” Wilkins said. “I look to attack, but I look to find teammates too. I’m not worried about the scoring part, I just play my part – hustle, scoring, getting my teammates the ball. I just want to win.”

The Greenies’ faithful love that.

For Wolfpack Nation is a godsend.

N.C. State has lived and died through the transfer portal, like most of college basketball, the last three seasons.

True freshmen earning quality minutes have come at a minimum, but Wilkins hopes to end that cycle.

For those State fans who aren’t familiar with Wilkins’ game, he has a quick description for them.

“Really, I’m a big man who can play inside, I can do almost anything on the floor,” Wilkins said. “I can pass, score, play defense, get rebounds. Just be a dog.”
