Grimsley has claimed the top spot in North Carolina’s football rankings.

After a long period of consistency, the HSOT Statewide Top 25 poll has experienced a significant shift in its top ranking.

Last week, the top-ranked Providence Day team lost to Georgia’s Rabun Gap, causing them to drop down to the No. 2 spot in the preseason poll. The state’s leading public school team, Grimsley, has now taken over the top spot. However, Rabun Gap would also be ranked highly if they were eligible for the poll.

After scoring 75 points against Wake Forest, Rolesville rose from the sixth spot to the third spot.

Northern Nash lost its spot in the rankings due to a loss against Southern Nash, while Watauga dropped to No. 25 following a narrow game against Freedom. Additionally, West Charlotte fell to No. 23 after being defeated by Chambers, who moved up to No. 13.

Here are some details about the methodology behind our football rankings:

  • The rankings are refreshed every week and made public on Tuesday mornings.

  • All high schools in North Carolina, except for athletic training academies, are qualified for the top 25 rankings in the state.

  • Each week, the top 15 list for the six area codes in the state is updated separately.

  • The N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs result in a temporary halt in rankings.

  • The rankings will be finalized and released the week following the state championships.
