Greensboro Day wins 13th boys basketball championship, downs Concord Academy in NCISAA 3A final
Greensboro Day never has to wait too long for its next N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association boys basketball championship.
The Bengals added a 13th title on Saturday with a 46-39 victory over Concord Academy in the NCISAA 3A final, another milestone for coach Freddy Johnson, who has more than 1,200 wins after reaching that milestone this season.
Greensboro Day only had to wait one year in between championships this time. Greensboro Day has now won it all in six of the last 11 seasons.
Earlier in the year, Concord Academy defeated Greensboro Day by a 54-48 score. This time, the game was a defensive grind, and the Bengals held the normally hot-shooting Eagles to below their season averages in shooting.
Concord Academy did not score for the first four minutes of the second quarter, and Greensboro Day led 21-14 going into the break.
The Bengals’ lead extended to 33-25 going into the fourth quarter, where the Eagles cut it to eight with a minute left but could not get any closer until a putback at the buzzer provided the final seven-point margin.
Addison Newkirk and Ace Flagg were the two main catalysts for the Bengals. Newkirk had 13 points, eight rebounds, and two steals while Flagg — the younger brother of Duke freshman Cooper Flagg — had 11 points and four rebounds.
Micah Gunter added eight and Marty Giant had 7.
For Concord Academy, Lincoln Raper led the way with 13 points and five assists. James Minlend added eight while Icare Bakadisula scored seven points off the bench.
