Golfers, fans come to Pinehurst for one of the hottest U.S. Opens on record

On Wednesday, golfers will hit the course for the last day of practices ahead of the U.S. Open.

This year’s tournament is gearing up to be one of the hottest on record.

We will begin to see temperatures rise Wednesday. Friday could bring record-breaking heat for the U.S. Open – with temperatures in the upper 90s.

This will have an impact on the professional golfers who will be exerting a lot of energy during the hottest parts of the day.

Fan safety is also top of mind for the USGA, which is why they’ve provided hydration stations throughout the property. Guests can bring 32-ounce or smaller bottles to refill.

If you were in at the tournament when Pinehurst hosted the U.S. Open in 2014, you may remember just how hot it was. WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said the hottest it has ever been for the U.S. Open in Pinehurst was 90 degrees. We’re told the heat this weekend will exceed that – making it the hottest U.S. Open to date.

Pinehurst forecast

Friday: 97, heat index ~100

Saturday: 92, heat index ~93

Sunday: 90, no heat index
