Garner takes No. 1 in final softball rankings for 2024; South Brunswick and Weddington among area code leaders

For the first time, Garner is the No. 1 team in the final HighSchoolOT statewide top 25 softball rankings, taking the top spot after winning the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A championship and ending the year with an 28-2 record.

The Trojans are just in front of two other state champions, 3A champ South Brunswick and 2A champ Southwestern Randolph. West Wilkes and Wakefield rounded out the top five. Other state champions that ended the year ranked were No. 9 East Wilkes (1A champ), No. 12 High Point Christian (N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association D2 champ), and No. 19 Freedom Chrsitian (NCISAA D3 champ). NCISAA D1 champ North Raleigh Christian was unranked in the statewide top 25, but did get ranked in the 919 area code top 15.

In total, seven teams from the preseason top 25 made the final statewide rankings, with South Brunswick the highest-ranked team who was unranked at the outset. Of the preseason top 10, three of them ended in the final top 10. Garner began the year ranked ninth. The preseason No. 1, Marvin Ridge, finished unranked.

The full final rankings — a statewide Top 25 and Top 15 rankings for each of the state’s six area codes — are below.

The HSOT all-state team will be released in the coming weeks.
