Former Kings Mountain coach Greg Lloyd to lead Crest football program

After spending one season as the head football coach at Starmount High School, Cleveland County mainstay Greg Lloyd has a job back in the area. It is as the head coach of Crest High School, Lloyd’s alma mater. Lloyd stepped down from Starmount on Mar. 22.

Crest’s athletic department announced the hiring late on Monday.

Lloyd is replacing Jim Sosebee, who resigned after a 13-1 overall campaign in 2023. Sosebee led Crest for two seasons, finishing with a record of 22-5.

It will not be Lloyd’s first time coaching Crest’s football team. The class of 1992 Charger graduate helped Crest as the Chargers’ offense coordinator during their big run in the early 2000s.

Lloyd is most well known for his 16 years as the head coach at Kings Mountain High School on the east side of Cleveland County. Lloyd is Kings Mountain’s all-time leading wins leader. He stepped down after the 2022 season before he decided to take a crack at the Starmount job.

In Lloyd’s lone season in Boonville, Starmount finished with a 10-2 record, its first 10-win season since 2014. Lloyd served as the head coach at East Gaston High School in Mt. Holly. His career win-loss record as a head coach is 159-82.

Crest also employs defensive coordinator Darrel Wilson, Lloyd’s former defensive coordinator at Kings Mountain,
