Former Hough, Hopewell coach Matthew Jenkins to lead West Cabarrus football

Matthew Jenkins is headed back to the sidelines as a head coach.

The former leader of the Hough and Hopewell High School football programs has found a new leadership role with the West Cabarrus Wolverines.

The news was first reported by Cameron Williams of The Charlotte Post. West Cabarrus later confirmed the news on its Facebook page, saying that there will be a player and parent meeting with Jenkins on April 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Jenkins takes over the program at its highest point. In their second season under Brian Hinson last fall, the Wolverines sharply improved to a 5-6 overall record, finishing third place in the Greater Metro 4A Conference, and made the N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoffs for the first time in program history.

Hinson departed the program to take the head coaching job at Davie County High School, which is the only within its school district.

Jenkins resigned from his post at Hough after the 2022 season. The coach had led the Huskies since 2017. Over his six seasons leading the Cornelius school, Jenkins finished with an overall record of 63-17. The Huskies made it to at least the second round in each of those seasons.

West Cabarrus has had talent since its inception in 2020, but the Wolverines have not been able to keep a coach for more than two consecutive seasons.

With an average daily membership of 1,626 students this school year, West Cabarrus is set to become a 7A program once the NCHSAA reclassifies into eight classifications. The Wolverines are set to join 6A/7A Conference H with 6As Berry Academy, Central Cabarrus, Harding University, and Olympic as well as fellow 7As A.L. Brown, Cox Mill, and Hickory Ridge.
