FINAL – Tarboro 45, Corvian Community 24: Updates & analysis from the 1A championship game

Pregame Notes
- Tarboro is wearing its classic purple on gold uniforms! The Vikings wore these in the 1970s and 1980s.
- Corvian gives up over five yards per carry. It could be a long day for the Cardinal defense against the Tarboro T.
1st Quarter
- Tarboro started with possession on its own 20-yard line. The Vikings picked up a first down on their first carry.
- Senior Mason Saterfield broke off a 46-yard run down to the Corvian 10-yard line.
- On the next play, junior Caiden Everette scored from 10 yards out.
- Tarboro took a 6-0 lead with 10:17 to play in the first quarter.
- Corvian’s first drive started on its own 20-yard line
- Tarboro jumped offsides on the first play but then came up with back-to-back stops for little gain to make it 3rd-and-4.
- On 3rd-and-4, Corvian passed and ended a yard short of the first.
- On 4th-and-1, senior Cam Johnson rushed for five yards.
- Tarboro forced a 3rd-and-8 and Johnson picked it up on a pass out of the backfield.
- Corvian picked up a first down up to the Tarboro 45-yard line. Crossing the 50-yard line on the first possession is a good sign for the Cardinals’ offense.
- Tyler Powell, Tarboro’s quarterback, sacked AJ Jackson to force a fourth and forever.
- On 4th-and-14, Jackson connected with Noah Best, who took it away from two defenders for a first down all the way up to the Tarboro 14-yard line. Catch of the weekend.
- FIELD GOAL CORVIAN! Cooper Peterson connects from 30 yards.
- Tarboro’s lead was cut to 6-3 with 2:49 left in the first quarter
- Tarboro’s second possession started on its own 30-yard line.
- The Vikings got one first down, but Corvian forced them into a 4th-and-4 from the Cardinals’ 47.
- After a nice punt by Cole Craddock, Corvian took over on its own 7-yard line with four seconds left in the first quarter.
- Corvian gained no yards on the first play
2nd Quarter
- Corvian faced a 2nd-and-9 from its own 8-yard line to start the second quarter.
- Tarboro didn’t give up any more yards and forced a fourth down.
- After a delay of game, Corvian punted from its own 4-yard line.
- Tarboro took over inside of the Corvian 40-yard line
- Back-to-back runs by Kamerin McDowell-Moore advanced the ball to the Corvian 12-yard line
- TOUCHDOWN TARBORO! Kamerin McDowell-Moore bounced it out for an 10-yard score. Tarboro was stopped on the two-point try.
- Tarboro extended its lead to 12-3 with 10:28 to play in the second quarter.
- Corvian started inside its own 20.
- After a holding penalty, Corvian got all of the yardage back and then some, picking up a first down up to the 26.
- Corvian continued with option pitches to pick up a couple of more first downs.
- The Cardinals threw a deep pass up the left sideline and drew a pass interference on Kamerin McDowell-Moore.
- A false start knocked Corvian’s first down back from the Tarboro 36 to the Tarboro 41.
- Tyler Powell and Cole Craddock made back-to-back tackles for no gain and a loss to force a 3rd-and-17
- On 3rd-and-17, AJ Jackson Jr. was sacked by Josiah Dickens.
- Tarboro took over on its own 16-yard line with 5:50 left in the second quarter.
- Kamerin McDowell-Moore went beat mode on 28-yard run up to his own 44-yard line.
- On the next play, Satterfield rushed for 16 and a first down into Corvian territory.
- McDowell-Moore picked up a 3rd-and-7 on power.
- TOUCHDOWN TARBORO! Mason Satterfield weaved through the defense up the middle on a 3rd-and-12 for a 25-yard score. Tarboro missed the PAT.
- The Vikings extended their lead to 18-3 with 2:01 left in the second quarter.
- Corvian started its next drive on its own 15
- AJ Jackson with a GORGEOUS 46-yard pass to Doug Qualres III into Tarboro territory
- On the next play, Jackson was picked off by Kip Biggs, who took the ball from a Corvian receiver and returned it to the Cardinal 37-yard line.
- Tarboro took over with 1:27 left in the first half
- Corvian forced a 4th-and-5 on the 32 yard line with 29 seconds left in the first half. Tarboro called its first timeout.
- Corvian forced a turnover on downs.
- The Cardinals took over on their own 28-yard line with 23 seconds left in the second quarter
- Noah Best had a nice draw run up to his own 48-yard line, but that ended the half.
Halftime
- At the half, there are some impressive individual stats for Tarboro. Mason Satterfield has 120 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Kamerin McDowell-Moore has 97 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Cole Craddock has 10 total tackles and 1.5 for a loss.
- Corvian has responded well to the Tarboro adversity. They are tough. When it feels like Tarboro is about to break the game open, Corvian has held its ground. However, there’s a chance that they’ll be worn out in the second half here.
3rd Quarter
- After great kickoff coverage by Tarboro, Corvian started the second half with the ball on its own 13.
- Awesome slot counter pitch play got the Cardinals in business early in this half. They got a first down up to the 30.
- Great mixture of runs on this drive. Options, QB keepers, zones, counter. They’ve kept Tarboro off balance.
- Corvian earned a first down up to the Tarboro 33.
- A completion from Jackson to Noah Best got the ball up to the Tarboro 24
- On 3rd-and-1, Jackson slipped for a 3-yard loss
- On 4th-and-4, Jackson found Best for a first down to the Tarboro 14-yard line
- six-plus minute drive to start the second half.
- TOUCHDOWN CORVIAN! AJ Jackson Jr. fakes a sweep, keeps up the middle, and uses his might to score from three yards out. Corvian cuts it to a one-score game.
- Corvian cut the Tarboro lead to 18-10 with 4:06 left in the third quarter. 18-play, 7:54 long drive.
- Tarboro recovered a surprise onside kick on the Corvian 49-yard line. The Cardinals almost got it after it first deflected off of a Viking.
- 13-yard gain by Caiden Everette.
- TOUCHDOWN TARBORO! A few plays later, Mason Satterfield scored from 12 yards away. The Vikings missed the point after try again.
- Tarboro expanded its lead to 24-10 with 0:32 left in the third quarter.
- Corvian returned the ensuing kickoff to its own 35-yard line.
4th Quarter
- Corvian started the fourth quarter with the ball on its own 45, facing a 3rd-and-1.
- On third down, Jackson kept for five yards and first ip to the 50.
- Jackson completed to BJ McAdoo for a first down up to the Tarboro 31. Corvian’s offense continues to keep Tarboro guessing
- On 2nd-and-13, Jackson evaded a sack and lofted a ball to Best, who made a great concentration catch on the 8-yard line for a first down.
- Tarboro got called for facemask, giving Corvian the ball on the 4-yard line.
- The Vikings forced a 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Corvian called its first timeout of the half.
- TOUCHDOWN CORVIAN! Great call with an option pitch from Jackson to Best, who powered through Everette into the end zone.
- Corvian cut the lead to 24-17 with 8:49 left in the fourth quarter.
- Tarboro started on its own 40-yard line after a kick out of bounds.
- TOUCHDOWN TARBORO! On the first play, Kamerin McDowell-Moore darted out to the sideline, managed to keep his feet in bounds, and rushed for a 60-yard touchdown. Tarboro’s PAT was blocked. 8:39 left in the fourth.
- Corvian took over on its own 18-yard line.
- Relentless effort by Tyler Powell, who sacks AJ Jackson for a loss of four yards to force a 3rd-and-14.
- On 4th-and-14, Jackson hurled a pass up the field and it was almost caught by Best
- Tarboro took over on the Corvian 12-yard line with 7:09 to go.
- TOUCHDOWN TARBORO! Kamerin McDowell-Moore hops around, evades defenders for a 7-yard touchdown. Powell scored a two-point conversion, Tarboro’s first successful conversion of the night.
- Tarboro extended its lead to 38-17 with 6:31 to play.
- Corvian had a nice kickoff return, but after a personal foul called on the Cardinals, they started on the Tarboro 48-yard line.
- Outstanding pass from Jackson to Best on a deep crosser for a 17-yard first down gain.
- AJ Jackson got banged up on the next play. Best replaced him for a play, then Carson Nagel came in.
- TOUCHDOWN CORVIAN! On 4th-and-11, Nagel tossed great ball to Doug Quarles III for a 32-yard catch-and-run score. The PAT was good.
- Corvian cut the Tarboro lead to 38-24 with 4:34 to play.
- Nice catch by Tarboro’s Cam’Ron Harper on the onside kick attempt. Tarboro took over on its own 45.
- TOUCHDOWN TARBORO! Kamerin McDowell-Moore escapes for a 40-yard touchdown. Taboro finally made a PAT.
- Tarboro’s lead extended to 45-24.
- Corvian was unable to score after that last touchdown.
