Extra Effort: Triton High School’s Berkley Campbell brings big heart to softball
A weekday afternoon during the school year? Chances are you’ll find Triton High School’s Berkley Campbell with glove in hand.
“Nothing compares to softball, it just doesn’t, the girls that I get to play with, they’re just, you don’t get it anywhere else,” Campbell said.
All-conference, All-district, but talk to her coaches, they say it’s what’s inside that makes her special.
“I think the biggest thing with Berkley is her compassion, not just for softball, but everything around her. She has a big heart,” said softball head coach Mark Whitman.
That compassion shows up in the classroom too.
“Berkley not only cared about her classmates, she also cared about me, which is something I cannot say a lot about high school students,” laughed Triton teacher Brenna Knudsen.
With a 4.4 GPA Campbell is heading to UNC Wilmington, pursing a degree in exercise science.
“I call all of them my children, but she is one I truly would adopt if I could, she just makes me feel so proud, I just wish every person could have a Berkley in their life,” Knudsen said.
Campbell has worked with community projects near and far through her church.
“The things you can take back from giving to other people are just amazing,” Campbell said.
Her faith serves as an inspiration for how she carries herself in her sport and beyond.
“Just showing love to everybody and giving my all in everything I can because God doesn’t give opportunities for me to waste,” Campbell said.
“The Berkley’s keep me coming back,” Whitman said. “You have special players every year and you grow with these players. She’s just one of those players you want to have on your team.”
And that’s why Berkley Campbell is this week’s winner of the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award.
