Extra Effort: North Johnston High School’s Sydney Daughtry
North Johnston High School’s Sydney Daughtry does a lot. It seems to be a qualification for being a recipient of the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award.
A teacher’s daughter, junior class president, a tennis player in the fall and a soccer player in the spring. It’s hard to see her slowing down.
“I love that it takes a lot of commitment and devotion. Just to be able to, it’s like a fight against yourself, to see how much you can keep going,” Daughtry said.
“I don’t care if you’re playing a game, if you’re practicing, if you’re doing something for fun, she’s going to go 110 percent with it,” North Johnston girls tennis coach David Anderson said.
On the court and on the pitch that’s led to wins and accolades. Plus there’s plenty of success in the classroom too. Daughtry has a 4.344 GPA.
“Everything she does, she wants to do to the best of her ability, which is the kind of student a teacher definitely wants in their class,” Agriculture teacher Christy Wheeler said.
And don’t forget volunteer work at school and her mom’s gymnastics studio. Daughtry says her inspiration comes from her faith.
“It just makes my heart happy getting to see people enjoy what they’re doing, and really just pouring themselves out for their sport. So in everything I do, I just try to give it a 100 percent, because it’s for the Lord,” Daughtry said.
That joy Daughtry feels, whether she intends to or not, she shares it with others.
“No matter how much she pushes herself, no matter how much she battles to be the best that she can be, she’s always finding the joy in it,” North Johnston girls soccer coach Chase Davis said.
“She’s a great example to, not only just athletes, but students in general, one can succeed with a positive attitude,” Anderson said.
“It’s not just that she’s good at what she does, but she does it with a full and kind heart,” Wheeler said.
And that’s why Sydney Daughtry is this week’s winner of the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award.
