Extra Effort: Julie Selig shines in every season for Fuquay-Varina High School

Julie Selig and sports at Fuquay-Varina High School. Hard to separate the two.

Fall, winter, spring, she’s played every season since her freshman year. Cross Country, swimming, softball, even flag football this year.

“She’s always playing a sport here and always has a smile on her face. In the classroom, outside the classroom, Julie is just to me the perfect student-athlete in Fuquay-Varina High school,” said director of athletic James Mountford.

“It definitely means a lot, it’s going to hurt to leave to go to college, it’s been my whole life like going here and playing the sports has been a huge deal. Everyone’s my family here,” Selig said.

A 4.15 GPA, a member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, plus she just does right by her peers.

“Shows up with cupcakes randomly when she feels the team needs a pick me up,” softball head coach Robbie Wray said. “It’s not something she does for show, she’s just very genuine in her care for people.”

She even started her own petsitting business in 2020. She now has about 40 clients.

“I came up with the petsitting, cause I love animals and my dad, he works at the shelter,” Selig said.

Softball is her love though, she plays in the outfield, connecting with junior shortstop Emma Peacock all the time.

“And she throws really hard, definitely got to prepare for it sometimes,” Peacock laughed.

Selig is heading to Barton College in the fall to play. She’s left her mark with the Bengals.

“She’s a competitor, she just likes to win, and what makes Julie so great is that cause she tries so hard,” Peacock said.

“I don’t know, I think you just get used to it, giving full on all the time. That’s just what you do,” Selig said.

And that’s why Julie Selig is this week’s winner of the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award.
