The final week of the 2023 regular season will officially end on Friday night. Let’s take a look at all the potential scenarios for each conference to determine who will clinch the championship before the playoffs begin.

At times, achieving “first place” in a conference can involve two tiers.

• In conferences with only one classification, the ultimate winner receives a trophy, has the opportunity to display a banner, and is given priority seeding alongside other first place teams in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s state playoffs.

  • If there is a tie for first place, the teams will be declared co-conference champions. The outcome of a head-to-head game between the tied teams will not affect the awarding of a banner. Both teams will receive a trophy, but only one can be seeded first among the other conference champions in the playoff brackets. Usually, this decision is based on the result of the head-to-head matchup.

• In split-division tournaments, the ultimate winner receives a trophy or banner. Additionally, the highest ranked opponent from the opposing division will also be given a top seed in their respective playoff bracket.

  • In a conference with a 3A/4A split classification, the 4A team that finishes in first place or represents the conference will be considered the top team. However, the highest ranked 3A team will also be designated as a 1-seed in the 3A bracket.

    • In split-classification leagues, a 1-playoff seed must either have a record above .500 or rank in the top three in the entire league in order to be seeded with the other 1-seeds for the playoffs (meaning they will have a home game in the first round). If a team does not meet these requirements, they will still secure a spot in the playoffs, but will be grouped with the at-large teams during the RPI-based seeding process.

There are certain conferences where the ultimate winner has already been determined.

Clinched Conferences

These conferences have seen their league titles clinched an outright by a team that has a lead in the standings that is mathematically impossible to surmount with one more week to play. They will be the top playoff seeds out of their respective leagues for the playoffs.

The overall champion is West Henderson in Mountain 7 3A.

The winner of the Mountain Foothills 1A/2A competition is Brevard.

• Polk County, with a record of 4-5 overall and 3-2 in their conference, is the only 1A team in their league and therefore automatically the top team in that division. In order to secure a playoff spot at the top of the 1A West playoff field with other conference champions, the Wolverines must defeat Brevard in week 11 and maintain an overall winning percentage of .500. Polk County’s RPI is expected to be sufficient for playoff qualification regardless of the outcome of their game against Brevard.

Watauga from Northwestern 3A/4A is the overall winner.

• The first place position in the playoffs for the 3A division of the league has not yet been determined.

  • The teams of Ashe County, Freedom, and Hibriten are currently tied for first place in the 3A division with 2 wins and 2 losses each in conference play. Ashe County will face Watauga (who has a perfect 4-0 record in conference) while Freedom will play against Alexander Central (also with a 2-2 record in conference). Hibriten, on the other hand, will be playing against South Caldwell (who has yet to win a game in conference). In terms of head-to-head matchups, Hibriten has the advantage over Freedom, Freedom has the advantage over Ashe County, and Ashe County has the advantage over Hibriten.

  • These are the potential outcomes for Friday:

    • Ashe County is awarded the top 3A playoff seed because it performed better against the conference’s top team (Watauga), which is the determining factor before using RPI rankings.

      Freedom secures the top seed in the 3A playoffs due to their head-to-head tiebreaker victories over Ashe County, Watauga, and Alexander Central. This was after Ashe County was defeated by Watauga and Hibriten was defeated by South Caldwell, while Freedom emerged victorious against Alexander Central.

    • , Alexander Central defeats Freedom, and Hibriten beats South Caldwell.

    • Hibriten secures the top seed in the 3A playoffs due to their head-to-head tiebreaker win against Freedom, while Ashe County falls to Watauga and Alexander Central is defeated by Freedom. South Caldwell also loses to Hibriten.

Jay M. Robinson is the overall champion in the Southern Piedmont 3A division.

Partially-Clinched Conferences

These schools have secured at least a portion of the conference championship, but they still require a victory next week or a defeat by the trailing team in order to claim sole possession of the title. Additionally, many of these teams have already secured the top seed for the playoffs in their respective conferences.

4A Conferences with Co-Champs

Metro – Grimsley

• Grimsley has secured at least a shared conference title and will hold the top seed in the league for playoffs, boasting a perfect 6-0 record in conference play.

  • The Whirlies must secure a victory away against Northern Guilford (3-3) or have Northwest Guilford (5-1) suffer a defeat on the road at Southwest Guilford (3-3) in order to claim the conference championship title without any ties.

NAC 6 – Rolesville

• Rolesville, with a 4-0 record in conference games, has secured at least a shared conference title.

  • The Rams must defeat Heritage (3-1) at their home stadium to claim the league championship and secure the top seed for the playoffs in their conference.

• If Millbrook (3-1) wins their home game against Wake Forest (2-2) and Heritage defeats Rolesville, they will have a chance to share the conference title with Rolesville. This would result in a three-way tie for first place, which would likely be determined by each team’s RPI rating.

• If Heritage (3-1) defeats Rolesville, they would secure a co-conference championship. Additionally, if Wake Forest defeats Millbrook, Heritage could potentially earn the top playoff seed. In this situation, Heritage would have the required head-to-head tiebreaker over Rolesville.

So Meck – Myers Park

• Myers Park (with a perfect 4-0 conference record) has secured at least a shared conference title.

  • .

    The Mustangs must beat South Mecklenburg (3-1) away in order to claim the league championship and secure the highest playoff position within the conference.

• If South Mecklenburg (3-1) defeats the Mustangs, they will secure a portion of the conference championship alongside Myers Park.

• Ardrey Kell High School (3-1) could secure a shared conference title by defeating Palisades High School (2-2) and if South Mecklenburg High School wins against Myers Park High School.

• If both Ardrey Kell and South Mecklenburg are victorious, there will be a shared conference championship between them and Myers Park. The tie for seeding in the playoffs will be determined by the RPI.

Weddington is in the 4A division of Southern Carolina.

• Weddington, with a conference record of 3-0, has secured at least a shared conference title and the highest playoff seed within the league.

  • The Warriors must achieve a victory against Marvin Ridge (1-2) OR rely on a loss by Porter Ridge (2-1) against Sun Valley (1-2) in order to secure the league championship.

Carolina Big – Havelock

  • The Rams must either defeat J.H. Rose (3-2) at home or have Jacksonville (4-1) lose to Northside-Jacksonville in order to secure the conference championship.

• The season for New Bern (4-2) has ended and they have secured the top seed in the playoffs among the 4A teams, with D.H. Conley being the only other team in the league.

Mideastern – Hoggard

• Hoggard, with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play, has secured at least a shared conference title and the top seed in the playoffs for the league’s 4A teams.

  • The Vikings must either defeat New Hanover (4-2) or hope for Laney (5-1) to lose against Topsail (2-4) in order to secure the league championship.

• North Brunswick currently holds the highest playoff seed for the 3A teams in the league with a record of 3-3.

Hough is a neighborhood in the city of Queen City.

  • The Huskies must either defeat Hopewell (1-5) or have Chambers (5-1) lose to Mallard Creek (4-2) in order to secure the league championship.

Sandhills – Pinecrest

• Pinecrest, with a perfect conference record of 5-0, has secured at least a shared conference title and the top seed in the playoffs among all 4A teams in their league.

  • The Patriots must defeat Union Pines (1-4) in order to secure the league championship. If the Richmond-Scotland game results in a win, there will be a tie for the conference banner if Pinecrest loses.

The peak – A.C. Reynolds

• AC Reynolds has secured at least a shared conference title and the highest playoff seed among the 3A teams in the league.

  • The Rockets must defeat McDowell (2-3) in order to secure the league championship. T.C. Roberson (5-1) has finished their league matches, and a loss for Reynolds would result in both Roberson and Reynolds sharing the title.

• T.C. Roberson has secured the highest seed for playoffs among the 4A teams in the league.

United 8 – Seventy-First

• Seventy-First (with a perfect conference record of 6-0) has secured at least a shared conference title and the number one spot in the playoffs among the 3A teams in the league.

  • The Falcons must either defeat Douglas Byrd (0-6) or have Cape Fear (5-1) lose to Gray’s Creek (2-4) in order to secure the league championship.

  The 4A teams in this conference will determine the top playoff seed as Jack Britt (4-2) takes on South View (4-2) in their upcoming game.

3A Conferences with Co-Champs

Alamance in the central-southern region.

• Southern Alamance, with a record of 5-0 in conference play, has secured at least a shared conference title and the top seed for the playoffs within their league.

  • To secure the league title, the Patriots must either defeat Western Alamance (3-2) at home or have Williams (4-1) lose to Person (2-3).

• Williams, with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss, could become co-conference champions by defeating Person, who has 2 wins and 3 losses, and if Southern Alamance, with 5 wins and no losses, loses to Western Alamance, with 3 wins and 2 losses. However, the Bulldogs would not be granted the top seed in the playoffs since Southern Alamance has the tiebreaker advantage.

White Oak along the coast

• White Oak, with a conference record of 4-0, has secured at least a shared conference title and the top seed in the league playoffs.

  • To secure the league’s outright title, the Vikings must either win against Swansboro (0-4) or have Richlands (3-1) lose against Dixon (1-3).

• If Richlands (3-1) defeats Dixon (1-3) and White Oak (4-0) loses to Swansboro (0-4), they would both be co-conference champions. However, White Oak would still receive the top playoff seed due to their head-to-head tiebreaker against Richlands.

Hunt in Quad County

• Hunt has secured at least a shared conference title with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play.

  • The Warriors must defeat Fike (5-1) in order to clinch the league championship and secure the top seed for the conference playoffs.

  Fike (5-1) could claim a shared conference title and secure the first playoff spot in the league by defeating Hunt. The Golden Demons would have the advantage in any tiebreaker scenarios against the Warriors.

2A/3A Conferences with Co-Champs

The Big East – Southern Nash

• Southern Nash (with a conference record of 5-0) has secured a co-conference championship and the top seed in the playoffs among the 3A teams in the league.

    The Firebirds must either defeat Franklinton (2-3) or have Northern Nash (4-1) lose to Rocky Mount (3-2) in order to win the league championship outright.

  • To secure the league championship, the Eagles must either defeat Pasquotank County (1-5) or hope for a loss by Hertford County (5-1) against Holmes (4-2).

• Currituck County has secured the first playoff spot among the 3A teams in the league with a record of 4-2.

Northern Lakes – Vance County

• Vance County, with a conference record of 5-0, has secured at least a share of the conference title and will be the top seed in the playoffs among the 3A teams in their league.

  • The Vipers must either defeat J.F. Webb (2-3) or have Southern Durham (4-1) lose against Carrboro (1-4) in order to secure the league championship.

• The team from Louisburg (with a record of 4-2) has secured the highest spot in the playoffs compared to the other 2A teams in the league.

Monroe – Rocky River

• Monroe has secured a minimum of a shared conference title and the highest playoff seed among the 2A teams in the league with a record of 4-0 in conference play.

  • The Redhawks must defeat West Stanly (2-2) in order to secure the league championship. If Forest Hills and Anson, both with a record of 3-1, face off and only have one loss, they could potentially share the conference trophy if Monroe makes a mistake.

• Parkwood and Piedmont, both with a 0-4 record in conference games, are facing off to determine the top 3A team in their league. The victorious team will secure a spot in the playoffs, but they will not be ranked alongside the other 3A West conference champions due to their current standings and records.

2A Conferences with Co-Champs

Catawba Valley – Bunker Hill

  Bunker Hill, with a perfect conference record of 6 wins and 0 losses, has secured at least a shared conference title and the first seed in the playoffs from their league.

  • The Bears must secure the league’s title outright by either winning at Bandys (3-3) or if West Lincoln (5-1) loses at home against Lincolnton (4-2).

• If West Lincoln (5-1) beats Lincolnton (4-2) AND Bunker Hill (6-0) loses to Bandys (3-3), they would become co-conference champions. However, Bunker Hill would still be the top seed in the playoffs due to their head-to-head tiebreaker against West Lincoln.

Wallace-Rose Hill in East Central region

• Wallace-Rose Hill has secured the top spot in the playoffs and at least a share of the conference championship with a perfect 5-0 record in conference play.

  • The Bulldogs must secure a victory against James Kenan (3-2) in order to clinch the league’s championship.

  If Southwest Onslow and East Duplin, with both teams having a record of 4-1, were to face off, the victorious team would be named co-conference champions. However, if Wallace-Rose Hill (5-0) were to lose to James Kenan (3-2), it would still secure the top playoff seed due to having won the necessary head-to-head tiebreakers against both Southwest Onslow and East Duplin.

Southeastern – Clinton

However, even in this situation, Clinton will secure the top playoff seed in the league due to having the head-to-head tiebreaker against both St. Pauls and Midway.

Meetings with Joint Winners of 1st and 2nd Place

Coastal Plains – Northside-Pinetown

• Northside-Pinetown has secured at least a shared conference championship with a record of 4 wins and 0 losses in conference play.

    The Panthers must win against Pamlico County (3-1) away from home in order to claim the conference championship and secure the top seed among all 1A teams in the conference. If Pamlico emerges victorious, they and Northside would be co-champions, but Pamlico would earn the higher playoff seed based on their direct matchup.

  The conference only has one 2A team, East Carteret (1-3), but their spot in the playoffs is not guaranteed because they did not place in the top two of the conference standings. The Mariners have a low RPI and a victory against Lejeune (1-3) may improve their chances, but it may not be enough to secure a spot among the top 32 2A teams in the East for the playoffs.

Soccer Exclusive – Davidson Community School

• The Community School of Davidson, with a record of 6-0 in conference play, has secured at least a shared conference championship.

    The Spartans must win against Pine Lake Prep (5-1) away from home to claim the overall league championship and earn the number one seed among the 2A teams in the conference. If Pine Lake Prep wins, they will hold the tiebreaker and be the top seed from the league.

• Bishop McGuinness (4-2) has secured the highest playoff seed amongst the 1A teams in the league.

Four Rivers – Tarboro

• Tarboro has secured the top seed in the 1A teams of the league and at least a co-championship in the conference with a record of 4-0.

  • The Vikings must either defeat Washington County (0-4) or have Bertie (3-1) lose to Martin County (2-2) in order to secure the league championship.

• Martin County (2-2) is the sole 2A team in the league, making them the 2A champion. According to NCHSAA regulations, Martin must place in the top two positions to secure a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. Otherwise, they will have to rely on the at-large process, which takes into account the top RPI scores. Martin’s RPI score is expected to be high enough for playoff eligibility, regardless of the outcome against Bertie. However, a win would greatly benefit their positioning.

Waccamaw – West Columbus

• West Columbus has secured, at the very least, a shared conference title and the number one seed in the playoffs among all 1A teams in the league.

  • To secure the league title, the Vikings must either defeat East Columbus (1-4) or have Whiteville (4-1) lose to South Columbus.

• Whiteville has secured the first playoff spot in the 2A division of the league.

North Stanly and Yadkin Valley are two locations that are connected.

• North Stanly, with a conference record of 3-0, has secured at least a shared conference title and the highest seed in the playoffs among the 2A teams in the league.

  • The Comets must defeat Albemarle (2-1) in order to claim the league championship.

  To secure the top playoff spot among 1A teams in the league, Albemarle must defeat North Stanly. Additionally, this victory would result in a shared conference championship for Albemarle.

• To secure the top playoff seed in the conference, South Stanly (1-2) must defeat Union Academy and hope for a loss by Albemarle against North Stanly. South Stanly has the necessary head-to-head tiebreaker over Albemarle.

1A Conferences with Co-Champs

Northwest – Mount Airy

• Mount Airy has secured a minimum of a shared conference title and secured the top seed in the playoffs from their league.

  • The Granite Bears must either defeat Alleghany (3-2) or have Starmount (4-1) lose to Elkin (2-3) in order to secure the league championship.

• If Starmount (4-1) defeats Elkin (2-3) and Mount Airy (5-0) loses to Alleghany (3-2), Starmount would share the conference championship with Mount Airy. Despite this, Mount Airy would still receive the top seed in the league due to their head-to-head tiebreaker over Starmount.

Undecided Conferences

The top teams in the standings are currently tied and the outcome will be determined in week 11.

Undecided 4A Conferences

Cap-6

• The Leesville Road versus Cardinal Gibbons game (both teams have a 4-0 record) will determine the winner of the conference championship and top seed in the playoffs.

Central Piedmont

• The winner of the East Forsyth versus West Forsyth game (both teams have a 5-1 record in the league) will determine the conference champion and top playoff seed.

DAC-VI

• The outcome of the Jordan versus Hillside game (both teams have a 4-0 record in their league) will determine the conference’s ultimate champion and top seed in the playoffs.

Greater Metro

• The championship and top playoff spot for this conference will be determined by the game between Mooresville and Lake Norman, both of whom have a 5-0 record in league play.

Greater Neuse River

• The Cleveland vs Clayton game, featuring two teams with perfect 6-0 records in the league, will determine the conference’s champion and top seed for the playoffs.

Southwest Wake

• There is currently a tie for first place in this conference between Apex Friendship and Holly Springs, both with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss.

  • Apex Friendship has the advantage in playoff seeding due to holding the head-to-head tiebreaker against Holly Springs.

  • Apex Friendship High School’s team will be competing against Green Level High School, with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. Holly Springs High School will be facing off against Panther Creek High School, with a record of 3 wins and 3 losses.

  • If BOTH teams are victorious, they will both be named conference champions. However, Apex Friendship will receive the top playoff seed as a result of winning the head-to-head matchup.

All-American

• The winner of the Friday match between Overhills and Pine Forest will determine the champion of the league and earn the top seed in the playoffs among the 4A teams. Both teams have a record of 5-1 in conference games.

• The 3A teams in the league, Harnett Central, Terry Sanford, and Triton, are all tied for the top playoff seed with a record of 4-2. Harnett Central will face Triton while Terry Sanford will host Western Harnett (0-6).

• Harnett Central has the advantage in head-to-head matches against both Terry Sanford and Triton, while Terry Sanford has the advantage over Triton.

• This is the outcome of every potential situation on Friday:

• The winner of the Crest at Kings Mountain game (both teams are currently undefeated in league play) will determine the conference’s champion and top seed in the playoffs.

Mid-State

• The Dudley versus Eastern Guilford game will determine the conference champion and top playoff seed, as both teams are currently undefeated with a record of 6-0 in league play.

Western Foothills

• The Hickory vs Statesville game, with both teams holding a 6-0 record in the league, will determine the conference’s ultimate champion and top seed for the playoffs.

Undecided 2A Conferences

Eastern Plains

• The West Craven at SouthWest Edgecombe game (both teams have a 5-0 record in the league) will determine the conference’s ultimate winner and top playoff seed.

Neuse 6

• The top spot in this conference is currently held by Beddingfield, Eastern Wayne, and Princeton, all with a record of 3-1 in league matches.

• Beddingfield will compete against Spring Creek (0-7), Eastern Wayne will be hosting Goldsboro (1-3), and Princeton will be on the road to face North Johnston (2-2).

• Beddingfield has the tiebreaker advantage over Eastern Wayne, Eastern Wayne has the tiebreaker advantage over Princeton, and Princeton has the tiebreaker advantage over Beddingfield.

• If all three teams win, they will each share the conference title. The tie for seeding in the playoffs would be determined by the RPI.

• If North Johnston defeats Princeton (3-1) and Beddingfield (3-1) loses to Spring Creek (0-7) and Eastern Wayne (3-1) loses to Goldsboro (1-3), North Johnston would become co-conference champions. Central Carolina

Mid-Carolina

  The conference championship is currently tied between Cummings, North Moore, and Southeast Alamance, with each team having a record of 6-1 in the conference.

• Two of the teams in the conference, Cummings and Southeast Alamance, will be facing each other on Friday. The victorious team will secure a co-conference championship and the highest playoff seed among the 2A teams.

    If North Moore loses to Chatham Central with a score of 0-7, then the team that wins between Cummings and Southeast Alamance will be the sole recipient of the league’s top title.

Piedmont Athletic

Southern Piedmont

• Shelby and Burns, both undefeated in conference games with 5 wins each, will compete for the conference championship and the top seed among the 2A teams in their league.

• Cherryville and Bessemer City, both with records of 2-3, are competing to determine the highest ranking for the playoffs among the 1A teams in their league.
