Elkin repeats as 1A boys tennis state champions, beats Triangle Math & Science
Elkin’s boys tennis team repeated as N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A dual team state champions on Monday.
The Buckin’ Elks beat Triangle Math & Science 5-0 at the Burlington Tennis Center, as Elkin swept the No. 2-No. 6 singles.
Connor Ballard had the most dominant performance of the day for Elkin, beating Cooper Fielding 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Aidan Ballard won No. 3 singles over Eric Wu 6-1, 6-0.
In the No. 4 singles, Luke McComb defeated Alexander Rhodes 6-1, 6-1, then Jeremy Zamudio beat Soham Kela 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles. The closest singles match of the day — at least of the ones that were completed — was the No. 6 singles where Webb Snyder beat Rayyan Neikar 6-4, 6-3.
Owen Jennings of Elkin was named the most valuable player. Jennings played the No. 1 singles match against Prahalad Srinivasan, but the match did not finish because Elkin won the other five singles matches first. Jennings led 6-4, 4-5 when the match was called.
This marks the 10th boys tennis dual team championship in school history for Elkin, and the second in a row. Prior to last season, Elkin had not won a dual team title since 2013.
Monday was the first time Triangle Math & Science has competed in the dual team state championship.
The NCHSAA recognized one athlete from each team with a sportsmanship award on Monday. Wu was named the winner for Triangle Math & Science, while McComb was the winner for Elkin.
