After over six years since his initial appearance with Wake Tech’s men’s basketball team, Eddie Volkerts has now achieved the highest scoring record for the Eagles on Wednesday evening against Brunswick Community College. His two campaigns were interrupted by serving in the US Army, which included a mission in Syria. This serves as a poignant reminder that the journey is what truly matters, not just the end result. However, Volkerts admits that earning a spot in the record books is still pretty satisfying.
“It signifies that my dedication has paid off, including the countless hours spent in the gym,” stated Volkerts.
After the 2017-18 season, Volkerts, who was originally from New London, Connecticut, departed Wake Tech to serve in the Army for five years. During his time with Wake Tech, he averaged 23.2 points per game, leading the team.
“Wake Tech men’s basketball coach Adam Wainwright acknowledged significant growth in him,” commented Wainwright on the player’s progress.
Volkerts stayed in contact with his head coach and eventually inquired about the possibility of securing a spot on the team roster if he decided to utilize his final year of eligibility.
Wainwright agreed, as long as he improved his grades, since he was not eligible at the time.
After attending several online classes, Volkerts felt prepared for the return.
“I believe I have grown in maturity, much more so than before,” stated Volkerts. “I still enjoy making jokes and having fun, but I am also aware of when to focus and be serious.”
This past year, Volkerts maintained an average of 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. As he enters his third year in college, Volkerts plans to transfer to a Division II team, with the aspiration of playing basketball internationally.
“I definitely want to obtain my degree first,” he stated.
“We view our program as a family,” stated Wainwright. “We appreciate when previous individuals return.”
It was appropriate that Koraan Clemonts, the previous record holder, was present to rejoice. Clemonts and Volkerts were teammates in the 2017-18 season.
Volkerts entered the match against Brunswick with 1,039 points, only nine points shy of Clemonts’ record of 1,048 points. Despite scoring 28 points in the team’s 107-89 defeat on Wednesday night, Volkerts focused on the journey rather than the final outcome.
“Continue pursuing your dreams and do not give up, even when things become challenging. This is what I did.”
