Eastern Guilford triumphs over Union Pines to claim their first state championship in dual-team wrestling.
Eastern Guilford has achieved a first in school history by winning the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team wrestling state championship.
On Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse, the Wildcats emerged victorious with a score of 36-21 over Union Pines in the 3A dual-team championship.
The match between Eastern Guilford and Union Pines began with Christopher Riley securing a pin against Chayden Hardy at the 2:16 mark, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The Wildcats continued their dominance, winning the first five bouts and building a 21-0 lead over Union Pines.
At the 3:15 mark of the 126-pound match, Omari Figueroa successfully pinned Joseph Lloyd of Eastern Guilford.
Logan Mitchell of Union Pines triumphed in the 132-pound weight category with a 6-4 sudden victory against Jayden Reza. However, Eastern Guilford countered with Troy Gryder’s 10-6 decision in the 138-pound weight class. This victory extended Union Pines’ lead to 24-3 with only five matches remaining.
Nathaniel Mitchell secured a victory over Finnius McCafferty in the 144-pound match in just 18 seconds due to an injury, effectively sealing the championship for Union Pines.
Eastern Guilford’s appearance in Saturday’s NCHSAA dual-team wrestling state championship was a first for the school.
Over the past three years, Union Pines has competed in the dual-team state championships, coming in second place each time. In both 2022 and 2023, they were defeated by Fred T. Foard in the final round.
