East Burke head football coach Derrick Minor resigns after two games

A head football coach has resigned just before week three of the 2024 high school football season. East Burke High School head coach Derrick Minor stepped down on Thursday.

East Burke’s principal Anna Moose confirmed the news in a press release. Minor texted a statement to the Morganton Herald which cited health issues for the reason behind his departure.

The interim head coach will be Allen Wittenberg. East Burke is set to host county rival Draughn tonight at 7:30 p.m. Witttenburg was previously the head coach at Draughn. Prior to becoming an assistant at East Burke, Wittenberg also coached as an assistant at Hickory.

Minor was picked to lead the Cavs’ program in 2020. He led the program to a 13-25 overall record,. Previously, Minor was the head coach at Princeton (2012-14),, Rockingham County (2015), Foard (2016-18). Overall, his head coaching record is 62-64.

East Burke is off to an 0-2 start so far this season. They’ve been outscored by a combined margin of 38-7 by Christ School and Freedom.
