Early goal lifts Cardinal Gibbons past Southern Durham
Cardinal Gibbons scored a goal early in Monday night’s non-conference boys soccer game with Southern Durham, and it turned out to be enough.
The Crusaders defeated Southern Durham 1-0, weathering multiple pushes by the Spartans, including a handful of shots that hit the crossbar or the post.
Senior Wyatt Southard scored the game-winning goal in the 6th minute off an assist from Luke Mackenzie, who placed the ball perfectly for Southard in the middle of the field just inside the box.
Cardinal Gibbons keeper Vikram Couto was credited with the shutout win.
Cardinal Gibbons is now 2-0-1 on the season. The Crusaders return to play on Wednesday with a road game at New Hanover. The game is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Southern Durham, one season removed from the school’s first-ever conference championship in boys soccer, seems poised for another strong season.
The Spartans are now 3-2-1. Southern Durham lost its last two games to Cardinal Gibbons and Topsail. Up next for Southern Durham is a road trip to East Chapel Hill on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.
