Duke men hit the road for Final Four trip to San Antonio

The Duke Blue Devils on Wednesday departed the Triangle to San Antonio for the Final Four.

Sky 5 flew overhead at 9 a.m. as buses carrying the team and staff departed Cameron Indoor Stadium. The team bus will transport the group to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, where they’ll leave for San Antonio to face Houston at 8:49 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of that game will play in the National Championship game on Monday night.

There was a lot of excitement outside Cameron on Wednesday morning, including a family of three generations of Duke fans.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the team come out and get on the bus, maybe wave at them, get a picture if possible, but we’re looking forward to seeing them off,” one fan said.

A father said his son was on spring break, so there was nothing stopping the family from coming out to support Duke early in the morning.

“There’s nothing more that we would rather get up at school time to do than be here and support them,” the dad said.

“It’s earlier than I’ve been awake all year, but for a good reason,” said Greg Marx, a masters student who showed up to support the team. “It’s definitely the most upbeat I’ve seen it … I think there’s an air of fun, an air of excitement. Everyone, even the non-sports fans, are getting invested.”

Cameron, the youngest fan in the group, showed up with a supportive sign reading, “Raise the Flagg in San Antonio.” He said he was looking forward to cheering on his favorite players, including Duke freshman Cooper Flagg, who on Tuesday was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Player and Freshman of the Year. Flagg leads Duke in points (682), rebounds (271), assists (151) and steals (50), and is second in blocks (47).

Duke is one of four No. 1 seeds in this weekend’s Final Four in San Antonio. The Blue Devils are in their 18th Final Four in program history.
