Cuthbertson takes No. 1 in final girls track & field rankings for the 2024 season

Though denied the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A championship, Cuthbertson is the No. 1 team in the final HighSchoolOT girls outdoor track & field rankings for the third straight year.

The final rankings are based on numbers taken from the N.C. High School Athletic Association and the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association championships. HSOT uses championship times across all classifications and associations and combines them into one big state meet to calculate the final rankings.

In some events, there were ties across different classifications. In order to determine the individual points, the first tiebreaker was podium placement (a 1A champ got the spot over a second-place 4A athlete in the same event), the second tiebreaker is their regional mark, and the last tiebreaker was their best regular-season mark. If the athletes were still tied, they split the points.

For the team rankings, if two teams were tied for a top-25 spot, the tiebreaker was whichever team had the higher finish at their respective state championship. If they both finished in the same spot (a 1A champ and 2A champ tying, for instance), they split the points.

Cuthbertson’s depth in a full statewide setting puts it 13 points ahead of 4A champion Rolesville and 19 points ahead of 3A champion Dudley.

In total, 17 teams from the preseason top 25 also made it in the final 25, with No. 4 Greensboro Day the highest of those who began the year unranked. Cuthbertson was also the preseason No. 1 team.

Aside from Rolesville and Dudley, the only other state champion that was ranked is 2A champ No. 12 Cummings. Swain County (1A champion), Charlotte Country Day (NCISAA D1), Asheville School (NCISAA D2), Trinity Academy (NCISAA D3) were unranked.
