Cummings secures the Mid-Carolina championship with a victory against SE Alamance, thanks to Paylor’s 7 touchdowns.
Cummings secured the highest ranking among the 2A teams in the Mid-Carolina 1A/2A Conference after defeating the surprising Southeast Alamance Stallions with a score of 47-14. Cummings also claimed a co-conference title, which will be shared with North Moore, a 1A team.
Jonathan Paylor, a committed player for NC State, showed his exceptional skills once again by scoring seven touchdowns in the game. Five of his touchdowns were from rushing, one from receiving, and one from an interception return.
The Cavaliers had a pleasant challenge, completing their regular season with an 8-2 record overall and a 7-1 record in conference games.
Southeast Alamance, which is in its first year of existence, is unusually advanced for a program in that stage. The Stallions entered the evening with a 6-1 overall record in the conference.
Paylor provided an excellent beginning for the Cavaliers.
At the beginning of the game, the senior intercepted a pass from Southeast Alamance with nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. On Cummings’ next possession, Paylor scored a touchdown with a 26-yard run, giving the Cavs a 6-0 lead. However, they missed the extra point attempt.
With less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter, Southeast Alamance successfully gained the lead. Junior quarterback Ryan Dodson, standing at 6-foot-3, connected with sophomore fullback Aiden Pak for a five-yard touchdown.
During the second quarter, Paylor and the Cavaliers once again dominated the scoreboard, thanks to a five-yard rush by a future member of the Wolfpack. With 4:46 remaining in the first half, Cummings took a 13-7 lead.
With only 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Paylor made his third touchdown of the evening. This time, it was a 34-yard run by the NC State recruit. Cummings took the lead 20-7 against Southeast.
Southeast Alamance narrowed the score difference to one point when Dodson threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Jerry Sims. Cummings was ahead 20-14 with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Devin Witherspoon, the sophomore quarterback, made a quick 48-yard touchdown pass to Paylor, resulting in the Cavs gaining a lead of 27-14.
With 8:46 remaining in the game, Paylor scored a 65-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 34-14 in the fourth quarter.
After a short period of time, the upcoming member of the Wolfpack made his second interception of the evening and ran it back for a thrilling 70-yard touchdown.
Paylor scored his seventh touchdown with only 1 minute and 18 seconds remaining. The touchdown was a 30-yard run in which Paylor was not tackled by the Stallions. However, the point after attempt was unsuccessful.
Southeast Alamance finished the regular season with a 6-4 overall record and a 6-2 record in Mid-Carolina Conference play. The Stallions are likely to make the playoffs.
