Once again, a notable high school football program has come into existence.

HighSchoolOT spoke with Clinton High School athletic director Brad Spell this morning and he confirmed that head football coach Cory Johnson has resigned following a meeting with Clinton City Schools Superintendent Wesley Scott Johnson on Friday.

Several reputable sources have indicated that Johnson, previously a defensive coordinator at Scotland County High School, will be joining forces with other coaches in his network at a high school in South Carolina.

Last fall, under Johnson’s leadership, Clinton achieved a 15-1 record and made it to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A state championship game. However, they suffered a 28-18 defeat against Reidsville.

The Dark Horses enlisted Johnson to lead the team in 2018 for his first head coaching position. In his six-year tenure, Clinton consistently qualified for the NCHSAA playoffs and earned a total of five conference titles. The Dark Horses also produced several successful players who went on to play college football at the Power 5 level.

Johnson ended his tenure at Clinton with a 61-12 overall record.
