Connor Sousa hits 2 home runs to carry Apex Friendship past Cardinal Gibbons
Apex Friendship used two home runs from Connor Sousa to outpace Cardinal Gibbons in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday.
Sousa recorded three hits, two home runs, three RBI, and two runs scored on four at bats. The sophomore helped the Patriots to a 10-8 win over Cardinal Gibbons.
The first home run came in the first inning for Sousa. The two-RBI homer gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead, but Cardinal Gibbons scored four runs in the second inning to claim a 4-2 advantage.
Apex Friendship got a run back in the third inning when Drew Ciaccio crossed the plate on a Cardinal Gibbons error.
Ciaccio gave the Patriots the lead again in fourth inning. A three-run triple to left field by the senior put Apex Friendship up 6-4. Ciaccio scored later in the inning when Hayden Fones hit a single.
The Patriots took a 7-4 lead into the fifth inning, and they added two more runs. Connor Payne scored on a double by Ajay Rychcik and Rychick was brought hom when Braden Bloom hit a single.
Cardinal Gibbons got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Runs were scored by Jack Bolte, Matthew Van Tassel, and Jakub Mudd, but one last home run by Sousa in the top of the sixth inning gave Apex Friendship enough cushion to claim the win.
Ciaccio and Sousa each recorded three RBI and scored two runs in the game for the Patriots.
Apex Friendship (4-5, 2-2 Southwest Wake 4A) will return to conference play on Thursday when it tavels to Green Hope for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
Cardinal Gibbons (6-5, 1-0 Cap Six 4A) plays again on Friday when it travels to conference foe Enloe at 4:30 p.m.
