Charlotte Christian’s D.J. Layton taken in MLB Draft’s 6th round by Baltimore Orioles

Charlotte Christian graduate D.J. Layton became North Carolina’s second high school player selected in this year’s MLB Draft when he was taken in the 6th round, 189th overall, by the Baltimore Orioles. The first was East Rowan’s Cobb Hightower.

Layton hit .449 this year with 40 hits, 34 RBIs, 30 runs scored, 19 stolen bases, and four homers.

The numbers were big improvements from his junior and sophomore seasons, in which he batted .307 and .265, respectively.

He concluded his Knights career with 93 hits, 62 RBIs, five homers, 50 stolen bases, and a .341 average.

Layton’s freshman season was at Covenant Day.

According to baseball-reference.com, Layton is the Knights’ ninth MLB Draft pick, joining current major leaguer Bailey Ober and recent MLB players like Daniel Bard, Luke Bard, and Jackson Kowar.
