Catherine Parker repeats, leads NCSSM-Durham to fourth straight 2A girls cross country title

N.C. Science & Math of Durham athletes took the top three spots in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A girls cross country state championship at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville on Saturday as the Unicorns won their fourth straight team title.

Catherine Parker led the way for the NCSSM and the rest of the field. Parker finished the race in 18:42.38, 52 seconds ahead of second place. Parker was the only runner to finish under the 19-minute mark.

Parker, a senior, is a repeat champion. Last year, she won the championship on the same course with a time of 18:32.64. That marked the first girls cross country state champion in school history for NCSSM.The next two runners were also Unicorns. Moira Furr finished second with a time of 19:34.42 and Helen Chen placed third with a time of 19:48.89.

Two Pine Lake Prep athletes rounded out the top five in the individual standings. Lyla Henneger was fourth and Maya Little was fifth with times of 19:50.60 and 19:54.00 respectively.

The Unicorns finished the day with 75 points to win the team championship too. Seaforth finished just behind with 90 points, putting the Hawks in second place.

Pine Lake Prep (119), West Stokes (126) and Lincoln Charter (130) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
