Carolina Hurricanes send Mikko Rantanen to Dallas Stars :: WRALSportsFan.com

For the second time this season, the Carolina Hurricanes have a trade involving star winger Mikko Rantanen.
This time instead of acquiring his services, they’re sending him away. In the shadows of the NHL trade deadline, the Canes sent Rantanen to the Dallas Stars in exchange for two first-round picks in 2026 and 2028, two third-round picks in 2026 and 2027 and 22-year-old center Logan Stankoven.
The Hurricanes originally traded forward Jack Drury and Martin Necas, as well as a second-round and third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to acquire Rantanen from the Colorado Avalance and Taylor Hall from the Chicago Blackhawks.
An unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, reports from around the NHL indicated the Canes and Rantanen were unable to agree to a contract extension prior to the 3 p.m. deadline on Friday.
Rantanen was a major part of the Colorado’s Stanley Cup-winning team. He scored 90+ points in three straight seasons before this year. In 13 games with the Hurricanes, Rantanen had two goals and four assists.
Stankoven has scored nine goals and totaled 20 assists in 59 games with the Stars this season. The 22-year-old has 43 points in 83 NHL games for Dallas and added eight points in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff appearances.
“Logan is young, skilled and tenacious,” Carolina Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said in a statement. “He is well-equipped to play our style of hockey and should be an excellent fit with our group, and the draft capital acquired will help us continue to improve our team.”
The Hurricanes made an additional move late in the day, sending a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Nashville Predators for forward Mark Jankowski.
“Mark adds size and depth to our team down the middle,” Tulsky said. “His addition gives our coaches more lineup flexibility for the stretch run and the playoffs.”
The 30-year-old Jankowski is in his ninth NHL season. He’s totaled nine points in 41 games for the Preds this season.
