Cardinal Gibbons wins first 4A boys swimming state title
They may not have won any gold medals, but the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders took home the team trophy at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A swimming & diving state championship on Thursday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
Cardinal Gibbons leaned on a second-place finish and two third-place finishes to win the team title with 241 points, well ahead of second-place Enloe, which posted 185 points.
The Crusaders’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Tommy Tuescher, Cooper Wiese, Jacob Anderson, and Carter Lange placed second with a time of 1:24.69, just behind the Myers Park squad who posted a time of 1:23.86.
Jett Dooley, Nick John, Tuescher, and Anderson finished third in the 200-yard medley relay, and Lange was third in the 50-yard freestyle race for the Crusaders.
This marks the first time since 2013 that Cardinal Gibbons has won a boys swimming & diving state championship. The Crusaders won the 3A title that season. Thursday’s championship was the first 4A boys swimming state title in school history, but the seventh overall across the 2A, 3A, and 4A classifications.
Enloe narrowly beat out reigning 4A champion Marin Ridge for second eplace in the team standings. The Eagles won three gold medals on Thursday.
Ian Stutts won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:46.26 — just .03 seconds faster than his teammate Alex Townsend.
Townsend went on to win the 100-yard freestyle race with a time of 47.49. Enloe also won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:31.82. Stutts and Townsend joined Parker Van Olst and Grady Godpodarek on the relay team.
Michael Rice of Marvin Ridge was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 4A state championship. Rice won gold in the 100-yard freestyle and was on the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay team. He also took home second in the 200-yard medley relay and 50-yard freestyle.
Following the meet, the NCHSAA honored one member from the champion and runner-up as sportsmanship award winners for the season: Alex Townsend of Enloe, and Jett Dooley of Cardinal Gibbons.
