There is a new team atop the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A indoor track world.

Cardinal Gibbons finished the state championship meet at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem on Saturday night with 62 points, outpacing the reigning state champion Cuthbertson, who finished second with 38 points.

Cuthbertson had won the last three 4A championships, but the Cavaliers’ run included the last seven state championships between the 3A and 4A classifications.

Cardinal Gibbons had four first-place finishes and two second-place finishes on Saturday.

The 4×800 relay team of Maggie Whitham, Addy Mitchell, Kaitlyn Estep, and Hannah Rae Shaffer won the first gold medal of the day for the Crusaders with a time of 9:18.27 — more than 10 full seconds better than second place.

Kaitlyn Estep won the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:55.70 and Hannah Rae Shaffer won the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:36.07.

In the field portion, Cardinal Gibbons’ Tessa Kranick tied West Forsyth’s Noelle Childs for first place in thte pole vault with a mark of 11-00.00.

This is the second team title in program history for the girls indoor track team at Cardinal Gibbons. The first championship came in 2011 when the Crusaders won the 1A/2A/3A state title.

Asheville and Mallard Creek tied for third place in the team standings, while Independence finished fifth.
