Byrd throws for 4 touchdowns as Cleveland shuts out West Johnston

Cleveland quarterback Jackson Byrd led his team to a convincing win over West Johnston on Friday night.

Both teams entered the game with 2-0 records, but it was No. 17 Cleveland that claimed the decisive 47-0 win.

The Rams scored 13 points in the first quarter, but a 34-point second quarter opened the game up for Cleveland. The teams played with a running clock in the second half.

Byrd finished the game 17-of-20 passing, accumulating 243 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. Deangelo Ruffin Jr. caught two of the touchdown passes and posted 84 receiving yards on four receptions.

Porter Bennett and Kaleb Ferrell each scored a rushing touchdown.

Cleveland’s defense forced five takeaways in the game. Sawyer Lowe had an interception and a fumble recovery. Josh Booth and Ronalon Renwick each recorded and interception, and Aiden Stephenson recovered a fumble.

Cleveland (3-0) will travel to Corinth Holders on Sept. 20 to open Greater Neuse River Conference play after a bye next week. West Johnston (2-1) is also off next week and will open Quad County 3A Conference play on Sept. 20 at Fike.
