RALEIGH, N.C. — RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Michael Bunting had a goal and two assists, Brady Skjei added a goal and an assist, and the Carolina Hurricanes matched their highest-scoring game of the season with a 6-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night.
Andrei Svechnikov, Jordan Staal, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and Seth Jarvis all found the back of the net, with Sebastian Aho contributing three assists, as the Hurricanes continued their point streak to five games (3-0-2). Pyotr Kochetkov saved 30 shots to secure his third win in just eight days.
“It becomes a more appealing offer when you receive a reward,” stated Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour. “I believe we have been performing strongly as of late.”
The Hurricanes had a perfect 3 for 3 record on power plays and successfully defended against all four of the Golden Knights’ power plays.
According to Bunting, the power play helps to generate momentum and the performance of our special teams has been exceptional.
Vegas lost for the second time in three games after a seven-game points streak, despite two goals from William Carrier and one from Nicolas Hague. Brett Howden recorded two assists. Logan Thompson allowed six goals on 28 shots before being replaced with over 15 minutes left in the game, and Jiri Patera stopped all 10 shots he faced.
According to Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy, in their power play, they effectively executed plays and were able to take shots from the elbow area. However, Cassidy noted that his team did not do a sufficient job of blocking shots and keeping the puck away from their own net.
After being sidelined for six games due to an injury, Svechnikov returned to the lineup. He received a pass from defenseman Skjei and took his time before scoring a goal against Thompson, giving Carolina their first power play goal of the game with 9 and a half minutes remaining in the first period. This was Svechnikov’s second goal of the season in his 17th game.
Brind’Amour expressed uncertainty regarding the appearance of the individual in question, but was pleasantly surprised by their impact. This was something that the team had been lacking.
It’s similar to a fresh beginning for the season that was already postponed for Svechnikov, who had just recovered from knee surgery in the previous season before his most recent injury.
Svechnikov stated that he had consumed some juice and was attempting to assist his teammates by making plays and simplifying the game.
Carrier ended a streak of 20 games without scoring a goal by capitalizing on a rebound from Brayden McNabb’s blocked shot by Kochetkov, making the score 1-1. This marked his fourth goal of the season.
After that, the Hurricanes were dominant.
Kotkaniemi had not scored in 10 consecutive games, but finally broke the streak with a goal at 10:11 into the second period. Bunting followed suit with a power-play goal just 1:28 later. Jarvis and Skjei then added to the lead with goals within the first 4:44 of the third period.
Jack Eichel, center for Vegas, extended his franchise-best points streak to 11 games by assisting on Hague’s goal in the final 1:24 of the game.
The carrier completed the scoring with 32 seconds remaining, earning his fifth point.
