Bobby Martin resigns as Morehead football coach

Morehead High School in Eden, North Carolina will have a new head football coach in 2025.

Bobby Martin resigned from the role after two seasons leading the Panthers. The job was posted today.

Maurice Torain, the head coach before Martin, left in April of 2023.

Martin’s 2023 season at Morehead resulted in an 0-10 overall record. In 2024, Morehead improved under Martin and qualified for the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 2A West playoffs. In the first round, the Panthers lost on the road at Shelby to conclude their season with a 2-9 overall record. The Panthers put up strong efforts in a week one road loss at Cummings (18 to 7) and a week two road loss to Rockingham County (13 to 7).

Morehead appeared in the 1958 2A state championship and the 1959 3A state championship, losing both to Rockingham.

With an average daily membership of 857 students this school year, Morehead is set to become a 4A program once the NCHSAA realigns into eight classifications.

In the second draft of the new proposed conferences, Morehead was placed in a 3A/4A league with 3As Bartlett Yancey, McMichael, and Walkertown as well as fellow 4As Carver, Cummings, Graham, and Reidsville. The conferences are subject to change following the appeals period.
