Bishop McGuinness rolls to 1A girls tennis dual-team title over Roxboro Community

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Bishop McGuinness didn’t show much interest in dramatics during the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A girls tennis dual-team championship match.

The Villains rolled through Roxboro Community for the state title by a 6-0 score on Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center, winning their third state title and first since 2015.

Bishop (20-1), the No. 3 seed from the West who took down three-time defending champion Mount Airy in the regional final, won all six singles courts in less than an hour. It only takes five wins to clinch a match, but both teams finished up all six courts anyway.

Lucia Neves’ match was a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 1 singles. Kendall Herr (No. 2 singles), N.C. State basketball recruit Adelaide Jernigan (No. 3), Sarah Pulliam (No. 4), Lily Winters (No. 5), and Anne Overman (No. 6) all won in straight sets.

Roxboro Community (13-2), the No. 1 seed in the East, had never advanced to the girls dual-team title match before. While the Bulldogs were making their first appearance, this was the fourth appearance in a title for Bishop, which now has three titles.

Neves, who was also the 1A singles champion, was named MVP of the match.

After the match, each team announced its sportsmanship winners. They were Bishop’s Winters and Roxboro’s Elizabeth Ess.
