Bishop McGuinness hires Avery McMullin as head football coach

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School has found its man to replace former head coach Mark Holcomb.

The Villains went with an out-of-state name to fill the void: Avery McMullin.

He will also serve as the assistant athletic director at the high school. The spot needed to be filled after Holcomb accepted a job at the college level.

McMullin previously served as the head football coach and assistant athletic director at the Tatnall School in Wilmington, Delaware. He currently serves as the head football coach at Thomas McKean High School in Wilmington, Delaware. Prior to his time at Tatnall and Thomas McKean, the coach was an assistant varsity coach and head JV coach at First State Military Academy from 2017-2020.

The coach was a Division I quarterback at Delaware State University and broke records while playing at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California. McMullin holds a B.A in Sports Management and Physical Education and an M.S. in Sports Administration from Delaware State University.

At Tunstall School, Coach McMullin led the team to back-to-back state tournament semifinals in 2021 and 2022. He took over a struggling program at Thomas McKean and helped increase participation in consecutive years. He had 28 players selected all-district in just two years (2023-2024) and 46 total including his two years at Tunstall. He also had 15 Academic All-State recipients.

Bishop McGuinness is coming off of a 6-5 overall campaign in 2024 in which the Villains made it to the 1A West playoffs. The school fell on the road at Mountain Island Charter in the first round.

With an average daily membership of 477 students this school year, Bishop McGuinness will shift to a 2A program once the N.C. High School Athletic Association expands into eight classifications ahead of next school year.

The Villains have been placed in the Greater Triad 1A/2A Conference with 1As Chatham Central, North Stokes, South Davidson, and Winston-Salem Prep as well as fellow 2A South Stokes. North Stokes recently hired its new head coach.
