Bishop McGuinness girls lacrosse wins 1A/2A/3A West regional final to get back to state title

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — Bishop McGuinness’ girls lacrosse team will be happy to play the role of the Villain once again. For the second time in as many years as there has been a 1A/2A/3A bracket, the Villains have won the West regional final and are heading to the state championship game.

Bishop splashed its way by visiting Community School of Davidson 14-7 on Tuesday in a game that had to be played on a flooded field thanks to all-day rain and couldn’t be postponed thanks to the rain in the forecast for the rest of the week.

CSD (10-7), seeded second in the West, trailed just 6-4 at halftime, including a 3-0 run to cut it to one, but Bishop (19-2) went on a big run late in the third quarter to was runner-up in last year’s inaugural 1A/2A/3A girls lacrosse championship game to Croatan.

The East regional final between Croatan and Union Pines will be Wednesday.

The championship will be either Friday or Saturday at Durham County Memorial Stadium.

Bishop (19-2), the top seed in the West, was led by Ella Suire’s seven goals and two assists. Morgan Aho had two goals, Kiersten Varner had two goals and one assist, and Emery Grunwald had three goals and an assist.

Community School of Davidson was led by Grace Maddox’s three goals. Breanne Manning had one gaol, as did Harper Giles. Abigail Luber had one goal and one assist and Bella Margyrta had one assist.
